Movie Review: Klown Kamp Massacre (2010)

Directed by Philip Gunn, David Valdez
Starring Jared Herholtz, Ross Kelly and Ashley Bryce

In 1991, Edwin went to clown camp to fulfill his dream of bringing laughter to the world....but nobody at clown camp seemed to find him funny. He is humiliated on graduation night when his big whoopie-cushion gag bombs on the big stage, and in a fit of rage he slaughters all of his fellow clown students, say for old man Bonzo, and then vanishes into legend. Years later, Bonzo decides to re-open his school, now called the Bonzo Ranch, bringing in a new, odd assortment of misfits and weirdo's looking to learn the fine art of the second oldest profession in the world. Edwin see's Bonzo's recruiting commercial on tv and wastes no time returning to the scene of his old crimes to pick up right where he left off.

Klown Kamp Massacre is a horror/comedy hybrid, with the strong emphasis being on the comedy. Sure, you're going to see and hear every cliché clown joke you've ever seen & heard but your also going to be treated to some pretty damn good script writing and acting. That, coupled with the deliciously slapstick-style kill scenes is what propels this great little movie past the endless pile of slasher films that make no attempt at originality. There is lots of fun to be had here kids, with every single character adding their own contribution to the overall wackiness. We've got rapping clowns, retarded clowns, a Seargent Slaughter clown, a pervert clown and even a hottie-clown. And as the bodies pile up the film just gets funnier and funnier. My favorite scene being the one in which the clowns are learning the art of proper seltzer bottle face spraying. One of the bottles has been filled with acid and after it is sprayed in the face of an unfortunate clown, his entire head disolves, except for his lower jaw but somehow he has managed to survive. As his fellow clowns try to keep him alive and comfort him we are treated to some truly hilarious stuff. The girlfriend and I were both laughing so hard we had to wipe away the tears. This movie was a total hoot and the surprise twist at the end wasn't too shabby either. Even if your not a fan of slasher films I dare you not to have a good time watching this. A great job by directors Philip Gunn and David Valdez, on what I am sure was a shoestring budget, they milked every last ounce of awesomeness out of this movie, all to our benefit.

The special features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, trailer and a nice little featurette, “The making of Klown Kamp Massacre” Its weird, its bloody and its god damned hilarious stuff. What else could you ask for in a slasher movie?

A very strong 7 out of 10
