TV on DVD Review: Todd and the Book of Pure Evil - Season 1 (2010)

Television is in a really good place right now. From Mad Men to Breaking Bad, Community to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Ugly Americans to Archer, television has stepped up in many genres. That's just in the United States. Canada seems to have stepped up their game, and they did it with a great little horror comedy called Todd and the Book of Pure Evil. I absolutely love this show. I know this is going to be unpopular for me to say, but Todd is what Buffy could have been if it were good. Seriously.

My problem with Buffy is that it was just too campy. I thought elements of it were okay, but it just never clicked with me. I know the Whedon loyals are ready to tear me apart, but I can't help it. Todd has things that Buffy didn't. There is a dark sense of humor to Todd. It reminds me of the days of Tales From the Crypt. There's also a lesson to be learned every step of the way. It's like The Twilight Zone, but the ending is never positive for the person who chooses to deal with the book.

Movie Review: The Evil (1978)/Twice Dead (1988)

The Roger Corman Cult Classics Double Feature DVDs are little slices of gold. For those of us who either 1) Remember these films from when they came out or 2) Remember these films from the VHS and Mom & Pop video store boom of the 80s and 90s these discs are a treat. For this particular outing, we shall examine the New Horizon films The Evil (1978) and Twice Dead (1988)… a couple of effective (and semi-effective, respectively) haunted house chillers from the broad era we like to call vintage.

Movie Review: The Terror Experiment (Blu-ray, 2011)

The zombie sub-genre has been a well that so many filmmakers, especially over the past several years, have gravitated towards. Romero did it best, of course, but Danny Boyle put his own spin on the undead successfully with his diseased ghouls in 28 Days Later. George Mendeluk's The Terror Experiment is much like 28 Days Later in its concept, but let’s just say it's not quite as effective in its delivery. It does have Judd Nelson.

The Terror Experiment involves the plight of an angry ex-military man who sets up a device on a high floor of a skyscraper that infects all who are on the floor and the vicinity. This in turn makes them contagious, rabid, silver-paint-faced zombies. Like 28 Days Later, these are the fast-moving zombies so don't expect any slow, lumbering Romero flesh-eaters.

The Movie Burrito: Uncle Farts' Dirty Movie Theater, Savage Island, Bigfoot, Pound of Flesh & The Prophecy

In this edition of Cinema Head Cheese’s The Movie Burrito we’ve packed in a high quantity of goodness that's sure tickle your fancy. We take a look at five very different titles that range from soft-core filth with Uncle Farts’ Dirty Movie Theater, the Linda Blair revenge picture Savage Island, John Carradine hamming it up in the sasquatch flick Bigfoot, Malcolm McDowell as a professor/pimp in Pound of Flesh and finally the criminally underrated The Prophecy starring (a pimp in his own sense) Christopher Walken.

Independent Entertainment is doing a similar compilation route that sister label After Hours Cinema (All under Alternative Cinema) has found useful in packaging adult titles, only the compilation that I’m speaking of,  Uncle Farts Dirty Movie Theater is primarily soft-core adult fare. It's not a bad thing though, as this marathon collection of sleaze does have its growl towel soaking moments. Four films are included on this third edition of the series: Adultery for Fun and Profit, Involuntary Bird, She'll Do Alright and First Time.

Movie Review: Lady of the Dark: Genesis of the Serpent Vampire (2011)

Directed by Phillip Gardiner
Starring Melanie Denholm

Eve is an ordinary married woman. A happy, spiritual woman who lives an idyllic life. But events take a turn for the worse when she is apparently bitten by a snake while meditating in her yard one night. And its not just a snake, its a vampire snake that bites her.

Its really hard for me to put into words how bad this movie was. The only thing I could compare it to would be getting water-boarded for an hour and fifteen minutes. In fact, I would happily eat a live centipede rather then watch this movie a second time.

Apparently, it is some type of concept film, and who knows, maybe Iam just not hip enough to get what the makers of this movie were trying to get across to the audience. In a nut-shell, here's how it went down through the first 45 minutes: Girl stares into her telephone, “Dear diary, Iam not feeling well.” Cut to a scene of the girl walking around the house ( insert horrible synthesizer music accompanied by a base cello). Girl staring into her laptop, “Dear diary, Iam having horrible nightmares.” Cut to a scene of the girl undressing (insert rock ballad song). Girl staring into the camera, “Iam not sleeping well at all, I wonder whats wrong with me?” Cut to a scene of the girl slowly walking up the stairs ( insert Celtic folk music). Girl is thrashing around in bed having a nightmare, (insert hard rock song). Now simply repeat that sequence, over.....and over.....and over, until you want to shoot yourself in the face with a cannon ball.

Movie Review: Strip Nude For Your Killer (Blu-ray, 1975)

Several years before Lucio Fulci splattered movie screens with the completely vile New York Ripper, Andrea Bianchi ( What The Peeper Saw, Burial Ground, Malabimba) had his hand in sadism cookie jar with outrageously sleazy, Strip Nude For Your Killer. As with the aforementioned New York Ripper, Blue Underground has taken the liberty of giving Bianchi giallo the high-definition attention. Did I mention the always stunning Edwige Fenech is in it? Yes, you must read on.

With a title like Strip Nude For Your Killer you better deliver ample doses of gratuitous nudity and graphic violence. Bianchi's film deliver's both! Our feature starts off appropriatly icky with a botched abortion that later takes the life of the young female patient. The openings effectively shot with a blue gel to add somewhat of a nightmare type atmosphere to the proceedings. After this horrible incident, Bianchi takes it right to tits and ass on a boat with a lecherous photographer, Carlo (Nino Castelnuovo - Camille 2000) using his camera rather aggressively to woo a curvaceous model. Aggressive tactics work for Carlo though, as soon we see Casanova hit a homerun with the model in the steam room. Too much sex already? Well, the blood does start to flow soon after, as models begin to perish at the hands of a motorcycle gear wearing slasher an a variety of ghastly ways.

Movie Review: Make Them Die Slowly (1981)

Directed by Umberto Lenzi
Starring Giovanni Radice, Lorraine De Sella and Danilo Mattei

Along with the film Cannibal Holocaust, Make Them Die Slowly, (aka: Cannibal Ferox) was among the first of the notorious Italian exploitation/jungle cannibal movies. Now considered by many, including myself, to be classics of the trash-cinema genre, they weren't very well received during their initial run. Upon its release, the film made claims to being “The most violent film ever made” and boasted of being banned in 31 countries and although that seems a bit dubious, the figure has been quoted in the Guinness Book of Records.

Movie Review: The Divide (2011)

Review: The Divide (2011)
Directed by Xavier Gens
Starring Lauren German, Michael Biehn
and Milo Ventimiglia

Doomsday scenario movies are nothingnew, but very rarely are you going to find one as thoughtfully made and well acted as Xavier Gens' The Divide. It is scary, tense and ultimately vicious and heartless in its portrayal of the human animal when placed under the most straining of conditions. As the movie opens, Eva, (Lauren German) is staring dumbfounded out her apartment window. What she sees is almost beyond belief, nuclear missiles are raining down from the sky in all directions like deadly comets. In a panic, she runs out of her apartment looking for escape, along with scores of other residents from the building. With the walls coming down around them,a small group of people, including Eva, are lucky enough to maketheir way into the buildings basement. There they find temporary safety from the mayhem above, where they soon discover they are not only in the basement but in the domain of the buildings unstable“doomsday-prepper” superintendent, Mickey (played by the near-legendary Michael Biehn). He makes it quickly known that he is in charge and if any of them want a shot at survival, his word is law.

Frankenhooker (Arrow, Blu-ray)

Reviewed by James DePaolo

Plot - From Frank Henenlotter, (Basket Case trilogy, Bad Biology and Brain Damage). When Jeffrey Franken’s fiancée is chopped to pieces by the blades of a lawnmower, he attempts to bring her back to life. He starts using the body parts of hookers, and resurrects her during a storm. And as fate would have it, Elizabeth goes down 42nd street as a prostitute and killing her customers.

Review - Like always if it has the Arrow Films label you know it's more than likely going to be a fine restoration. The transfer is incredible. I remember in 1990 going to a art house theater on campus at college with some friends, to see this film and walking out just all night talking about this film and how fun it was. Sad, this is the last film ex pin up girl Patty Mullen made. What a year for Frank. The re-release of Basket Case and now this. All of you ” new school” horror fans, that want something to have fun with your friends with, look no further. 21 years old, and watching this film you do not feel this film is dated. ( now Basket Case is another story) Henenlotter isn’t the only reason the film is a success. The film’s two main actors are also perfectly cast. This film just has cult classic written all over it.

Movie Review: Mandrill (2009, Blu-ray)

Fans of eclectic film distributor Magnet Releasing may just continue to get spoiled with their output with such consistency in quality acquisitions. With superb releases like I Saw the Devil, Hobo with a Shotgun and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil some of their lesser known releases like the film I'm reviewing today, Ernesto Diaz Espinoza's Mandrill, without proper attention could fall by the wayside. If you're up for a frenetically paced action flick that doesn't want to let you up for air, this may be it.

Mandrill is a pretty simple story of revenge, only this revenge film has some of the most magnificent, jaw-dropping exhibitions of gravity-defying martial arts fight scenes ever put on screen. You can thank Marco Zaror for the majority of dynamic ass-kicking.

Movie Review: The Gruesome Death of Tommy Pistol (2010)

Directed by Aramis Sartorio

Starring Aramis Sartorio, Daisy Sparks and Camilla Lim

The Gruesome Death of Tommy Pistol is an amazing comedy, I'll  just get that out of the way right off the bat. It also happens to be a great little low-budget horror movie. The subject matter ranges from the silly to the just plain old gross and inappropriate. And if your looking for something fresh, original and inspired in a movie viewing experience, then look no further because director, producer and star of the show, Aramis Sartorio has something really special cooked up for you here.

Movie Review: Naked Came the Stranger (1975)

Directed by Radley Metzger (under the nom de porn of Henry Paris)

Reviewed by Greg Goodsell

A too-cute-for-words professional couple, Gillian (Darby Lloyd Raines) and William Blake (Levi Richards) host their radio breakfast chat show from their sprawling New York mansion. Their lifestyles are almost too good to be true, and so William begins a clandestine affair with their assistant Phyllis (Mary Stuart). Catching them en flagrant delecto, Gillian is both incensed and turned on by the whole sordid situation. Gillian, dressing as a tuxedo'd Marlene Dietrich and William attired as Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch – appropriate, as he justifies the affair the result of “a three year and five month itch,” attend a decadent New York City costume party. Gillian's eye are opened to life’s possibilities, and begins a series of affairs in the most unlikely places, such as a London double-Decker bus cruising down Fifth Avenue, an elegant ballroom filmed in black-and-white silent movie fashion, even a lesbian fling with Phyllis. William and Gillian get back together, and things are so bright and colorful and lighthearted it's a genuine shock when all the triple-XXX humpings begin.

Movie Review: Trippin' (2010)

Occasionally when I have that rare chance to get out I love to hit local film festivals. The only problem is, is that they rarely come to Phoenix. Horror film festivals even more so are few and far between. A couple years back we had a genre festival in which I went to a showing of Devi Snively's Trippin'.  I unfortunately only got a chance to see about 20 minutes of it. What I saw was fun, so it was very cool to see that Alternative Cinema had picked it up for distribution. Was it good beyond the 20 minutes? Let's see.

A group of young campers set out to enjoy some sex, drugs and well...more drugs. The kids seem to be purposely cliché: virginal girl, slut and of course a stoner named Zed (Zed Wilson). Everything seems to be going fine until the group crosses paths with a creepy fellow lugging around a rolled carpet with some red substance dripping from it. Could it be a body? Well, a couple of the kids think so.

Movie Review: Clown Hunt (2010)

Directed by Barry Tubb
Starring Tanner Beard, Eloise DeJoria and David Keith

Odd, silly and occasionally even quite funny is the best way I could sum up Seminal Films Clown Hunt. On a hunting ranch in Texas, grown men gather to hunt the rarest game of all: clowns.

Once plentiful and common, now one must pay a hefty sum for the privilege of hunting them, and for this particular group of hunters its become an annual tradition. However, this season the stakes are even higher as game trail cams have revealed the presence of the legendary one of a kind white clown, Albino Willy. Unlike Shitty Fred, the sad clown, Willy is dangerous, and doesn't play by the rules. And after raping a drunken hunter who's out taking a dump in the woods, the rest of the hunting party is left on edge. The first morning of clown season brings success to the hunters, they're bagging “sillies” left & right. But soon Albino Willy is striking back at the hunters and along with the rest of the clown herd they begin to exact revenge, “clown-style”. Will any of the clowns survive? Or will the hunters be able to utilize their secret weapon, the Atomic Clown Bomb?

Movie Review: Baba Yaga (1973, Blu-ray)

Blue Underground has been pretty consistent with putting their attention towards the films currently in their library with their Blu-ray releases over the past few years. This isn't a bad thing; especially when previous to this release they had several Fulci pictures (Zombie, House by the Cemetery, and City of the Living Dead) just ripe for some 1080p love. Corrado Farina's Baba Yaga is possibly one of Blue Underground's lesser known titles to some Euro-cult enthusiasts but for an obscure Italian horror flick it has quite a bit of charm.

The Theatre Bizarre Opens For Buisness April 24th!

IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT BRINGS YOU A TWISTED HORROR ANTHOLOGY FROM THE GENRE’S MOST DISTURBING MINDS

THE THEATRE BIZARRE
Now on VOD
Available on DVD April 24, 2012

Chatsworth, CA – Image Entertainment presents a horror anthology like no other with its release of The Theatre Bizarre. The film was directed by seven veterans of the horror genre including Richard Stanley (Hardware), Buddy Giovinazzo (No Way Home), Tom Savini (Night of the Living Dead (1990)), Douglas Buck (Sisters), Karim Hussain (Ascension), David Gregory (Plague Town)and Jeremy Kasten (The Wizard of Gore (2007)). This boundary-pushing film featuring stories of ancient evil, love, obsession, addiction, gluttony, sexual nightmares, pain, brutality and of course, death, is now available On Demand with cable and satellite providers, and will be available on DVD April 24, 2012.

Down a seedy city street, a young woman is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night, she sees the front door slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the vast, eerie auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an odd marionette-like man who will introduce her to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees crosses paths with a lustful witch; A paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; The Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; The horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; A woman addicted to other people's memories gets her fix through the fluid of her victims’ eyeballs; And a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep. But as the stories unfold, something strange is happening to the woman. Something irreversible and horrific. Something that awaits its next audience in The Theatre Bizarre.

The Theatre Bizarre enjoyed a successful 2011 festival run, screening at Fantasia International Film Festival, Frightfest, Sitges Festival De Cine Fantastic and Toronto After Dark. The film began its theatrical release in the U.S. on January 27, 2012 in seven markets including NY & LA, expanding to additional cities across the country.
