Movie Review: Losing Kayden (2012, Digital Playground)

...one thing which this viewer appreciates about the best of the erotic, X-Rated film genre, even going as far back to the '70's, is the sense of balance, which the better of these films have...balance, in the sense that amidst the tantalizing scenes of sweaty and glistening, one-on-one heavy petting, and other torridly assorted methods of touch (...or two-on-one, three-on-one, and so on), there is an interesting and novel storyline depicted, in between the sexual he & she-nanigans...maybe even a flavorful amount of tongue-in-cheek humor, in the proceedings (...with the 'cheek' of preference, varying, of course...depending upon the...uh, situation). Such balance tends to help the viewer better appreciate the characters...to suggest a measure of motivation and purpose...that is, motivation and purpose outside the bedroom (...or whatever choice of convenient venue), so to speak. As contrived as the story was, in the last Digital Playground production, which this viewer previously engaged and reviewed (...see the most excellent "Code of Honor"), the wrap-around story...gimmicky as it was, was STILL quite unique, interesting and entertaining enough to carry the viewer through, from sex scene to sex scene...an engaging 'breather', in between the heated trysts. And so, with this in mind, after now having anticipatorily partaken of yet another Robby D/Digital Playground production, namely 2012's "Losing Kayden", this viewer cannot help but ask...uh, what happened here??...

...in attempting to desperately reach for that one big win, amidst a string of losses, James clings to a preponderant, addictive need to gamble; slavenly bound for one of his high-stakes outings, his girl, Kayden, tries to persuade him not to go, in her own lustfully imitable fashion (...and WOOF!! If what she does here, is any suggestion of her idea of persuasion, and this viewer had such a gambling problem...well, I'd have to say...uh, WHAT gambling problem??). Despite her erotically strategic, well-meaning wiles and intentions, Kayden fails to convince James not to go. Taking up the challenge in an unknowingly fixed game of cards with a deviously cheat of a gangster (Steve Holmes), James loses big once again...this time, at the cost of his and Kayden's house. Leaving Kayden holding the bag, so to speak, as Gangster Boss Steve sends his henchmen over to survey and case the new establishment, James bates a hasty retreat, and leaves town. Erik and Manuel, the dispatched entrepreneur-inclined enforcers (...they dream of leaving 'the business', going to Florida, and opening a chain of ice cream parlors) arrive at the newly and forcibly acquired house, only to confront a very defensive Kayden, backed up by her girlfriend, Mischa. Sympathetic to Kayden's dilemma...as well as quite literally falling for her...Manuel decides to go against the grain, take matters into his own hands, and challenges his reputably indomitable boss to a high-stakes card game, with hopes and intent of winning Kayden's house back for her. Will he do it??...
...and THAT'S IT!!!

...now, granted, director Robby D once again DOES entice the viewing audience with some of the most intensely heated and arousing sexual bouts set to celluloid...in particular, with the irresistibly beautiful and sexy Kayden Cross, who opens, as well as closes...or should I say 'climaxes' the just-short-of-90-minutes running time of the film, with awe-strikingly physical engagement and emotional intensity...simultaneously laughing, crying, moaning and screaming in absolute ecstasy, as she, for lack of a better term, 'does her thing'. As carried away as any viewer most assuredly would get, in watching her perform here, it is all the more surprising, storywise, that her convincingly arousing enticement fails to turn her boyfriend around. Heck, from a gambling addition, to a sexual addition, this viewer...if placed in hapless James' shoes, would not hesitate to trade up one vice for another...I mean, gotta have priorities, right?? Without a doubt, Kayden is most assuredly the standout performer here; although the remaining sexual trysts, involving the other heatedly enthusiastic players, also come across as genuine and arousing (...of the scenes where Boss Steve is getting tantalizingly serviced by his clinging entourage of luscious gals, I almost half expected him to look up at the camera...breaking that barrier...and giving a most assured 'it's good to be the boss', sh**-eating grin), without a motivating convention, storywise, to ties these scenes together, they almost seem to be merely adequate and satisfying, albeit negligible filler material...each erotically engaging session having clocked by, and leaving the viewer resignedly thinking, "...uh, next??"

...in the end, as compared to several of Robby D's previous, more reputedly and unconventionally engaging affairs, "Losing Kayden", despite the overall hotness of the sex scenes, unfortunately comes across as shoulder-shruggingly contrived and matter-of-fact...not an inornately terrible piece of adult film diversion, but not nearly as satisfying as one might have hoped...might have expected...higher expections, perhaps, in following up on the comparably 'bigger-than-life' "Code of Honor". In that sense, "...Kayden" loses something, alright...and it's most assuredly NOT Kayden. Without a doubt, the faulty culprit here, deftly falls upon the way-too-simple, ho-hum conventional wrap-around story...in retrospect, it just wasn't interesting enough to connect the prerequisite heated moments; on the whole, it needed something more...something novel...something less run-of-the-mill...and well, it just wasn't there.....
