Movie Review: Penumbra (2012, IFC Films)

Directed by Adrian and Ramiro Garcia Bogliano

Starring Cristina Brondo, Camila Bordonaba and Berta Muniz

Run Time: 90 min.

Marga (Christina Brondo) is a highly motivated, arrogant and successful businesswoman from Spain on assignment in Buenos Aires, a city she hates and who’s people she despises.  While in the Argentine capitol on a day the whole population is waiting to view a rare solar eclipse, she must also find a new tenant for her families decrepit apartment. Rapidly losing her patience, she comes across the mysterious Jorge (Berta Muniz) lurking outside the front door, who informs her that he has a client willing to pay four times what she is asking in rent. There’s just one catch though, the paperwork must be signed immediately. As Marga waits to complete the transaction, several of Jorges associates suspiciously appear at the apartment, and before long Marga discovers that their plan may mean a tragic and violent end for all involved.

Movie Review: Cold Sweat (2011)

One of the most satisfying things about about doing a movie review website is the very welcome international flavor comes through every so often.  After going through the generous amount of screeners that we get on a weekly basis it's always a pleasant surprise to discover a talented artist that I had never new existed. Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Rooms For Tourists, 36 Steps, Penumbra) is one of those few that make this reviewer dance like a giddy schoolgirl. The Spanish born, Argentina based writer/director has been working on his craft for several years and now, thankfully, folks outside of Argentina will see his work with Dark Sky Films release of Cold Sweat.

Interview: Adrian Garcia Bogliano

Jeff Dolniak got a chance to interview the talented director of 36 Steps, Rooms for Tourists and the recently released thriller from Dark Sky FilmsCold Sweat. Enjoy!

Jeff Dolniak: How are horror films received by audiences in Argentina? Are they popular?

Adrian Bogliano: They are very popular. However and I'm not sure why the producers didn't want to make this type of films before. During the golden age of Argentinean cinema between the 40's and 1960 there was a bunch of horror titles, most of them pretty good, but suddenly the production of horror films stopped almost completely. In the 90's a bunch of ultra independent filmmakers started to make microbudget horror films and it took around fifteen years for that generation of filmmakers to find a place in the industry. Cold Sweat became the first major horror film to be release widely in theatres in 50 years. And now things looks really different not only for horror but for genres like sci fi and suspense that didn't have a place in the mainstream production in Argentina before.

Synapse Films to Release Three Films From Argentine Director Adrian Garcia Bogliano!

SYNAPSE FILMS Rewards Fantastic Fest Favorite ADRIAN GARCIA BOGLIANO with Triple-Crown Feature Film Pickup

ROMULUS, MI - September 28, 2011 - Synapse Films has snared rights to three terrifying feature films by celebrated Fantastic Fest and SXSW filmmaker Adrián García Bogliano, the Argentine director of festivl favorite COLD SWEAT and the upcoming PENUMBRA, grabbed by IFC Midnight on the eve of the film's Fantastic Fest world premiere.

In ROOMS FOR TOURISTS a busload of girls fall prey to a town of terror... what connects the victims? The young filmmaker of WATCH'EM DIE takes a job that leads to horror. Four young girls stop to help a woman in the street and it leads to rape horror and death in the breath-stopping I WILL NOT DIE ALONE.

"I am a huge fan of Adrian's films and have seen every single one. I feel that he may be the most talented new filmmaker I have come across," enthuses Synapse head Jerry Chandler. "He is a master of making the most of miniscule budgets and his attention to detail is unmatched. I was hooked when I first saw ROOMS FOR TOURISTS---the atmospheric dread is palpable early on. I WILL NOT DIE ALONE is somewhat similar to I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, only it's a great movie! And WATCH'EM DIE is much more fun to watch than Hostel or its myriad imitations."

Synapse Films exec Jerry Chandler negotiated the deal with the filmmaker.

Synapse Films has recently released brand-new remastered Blu-ray releases of James Glickenhaus' THE EXTERMINATOR, William Lustig's MANIAC COP, and Frank Henenlotter's FRANKENHOOKER, with Tarantino-producer Lawrence Bender's INTRUDER out this December.
