Movie Review: The Flesh and Blood Show (Blu-ray)

Reviewed By: James

This slasher is about a theatrical group that is hired by some anonymous person and sent to this theater to rehearse while there is someone kills them off one by one. Pete Walker is very inspired in this film by Agatha Christie and mixes it with a little visceral horror to make a slow moving but at times very effective little film. This film really seems to revel in sexploitation and gives you some softcore goodies that most perverts like me will smile, but delivers some decent horror that also will keep that smile. Movie Review: Drug War (2012, Blu-ray)

Reviewed By James DePaolo

Drug War is the latest film from Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To. I feel no matter what I write after that, people will have their minds made up if this film is for them. Now, before you keep that train of thought let me tell you I had the same thought being I was also a fan of To. I know people are still trying to figure out where he is coming from after Life Without Principle, which was action lite and more of a thriller that he wanted to try and to put in the Oscar race.

Drug War seems to be his take on the classic cops and robbers chase films. To be honest, I did not hate the film as much as I did not think this is To at his best. This film takes the police against organized crime lords in a film that I feel suffers from the pace that To tries to keep. The film is shot to be fast paced, but the script and characters seem to drag the story. I mean To has a reputation off these kinds of films, in his homeland he is the king of these gritty crime stories and I just feel that this film comes across more like Romero who is the king of all zombie films giving us Survival of the Dead. China is now governed in this way that if you are caught dealing with drugs or manufacturing them you are sentenced to death. So when Timmy is caught with drugs instead of killing him he helps Captain Zhang with a bigger drug ring to help uncover it. He has only 72 hours or he will face his demise for the drugs.

Movie Review: Halloween XXX (Smash Pictures, 2011)

Reviewed by: James DePaolo

Jim Powers is to porn what Alfred Hitchcock is to suspense. When you think of the porn industry, you see directors that are on the cutting edge of how to take their fan base into this fantasy land that we watch on screen our deepest fantasies and perverted thoughts are acted out for us. You had to know it was a matter of time that the porn parodies would start to target horror films. While back in the day, we had films like a porn version of Re-Animator and Exorcist, I always felt that those were so lame and just uninspired. Last year, Evil Head showed mainstream horror fans that they should be more open to porn, and a ton of mainstream sites (ours included) had that film in their top films of 2012.

Now, the mad genius behind The Babysitter series and countless other series jumps into a porn parody of Halloween. I think this film could also get non-porn fans to warm up to porn. Like all Jim Power films, I feel porn and the fantasy world he creates takes a back door to the comedy element. This film has an odd sense of humor that you just know the people behind the film are fans of this film and loving doing this parody. Sort of like the original film, Michael Myers kills his slutty older sister, and like the film 15 years later he escapes the hospital and comes home. Now, comes the twist, Laurie this time around is a schoolgirl that Michael seems to be lusting after.

Movie Review: Hatchet III (2013, Blu-ray)

Reviewed by: James DePaolo

When the first Hatchet film came out, people were going on and on about the old school fun of it and some critics went way overboard on the film. Then came part II and this bogus “ support unrated horror” campaign that people acted like that film was the first film ever that had MPAA problems. You may see where this review seems to be heading, Hatchet is one of those franchises that the hype and talk outshine the films. Here we are at III and I will be honest, gone is the cheer-leading and hype because I feel even the biggest supporters will admit that this film is pretty bad.

Unlike the last two installments that had an element of fun, somewhat, this film has no personality or heart and just feels like all involved went through the motions. III picks up right at the end of II with Marybeth fighting off Crowley and thinking she killed him and going to the police with her story. Well once there, they think she is crazy and lock her up for questioning about who died. Well, when the Sheriff and his team decide to go investigate her story is when they find out that Victor is not dead.

Interview: Porn Legend Tom Byron

Cinema Head Cheese's intrepid reporter, James DePaolo, crosses swords...err we mean sword, to swiss army knife, with one of the kings of porno and his idol, Tom Byron! This one get's a little filthy, so enjoy you dirty birds!!

1. My god, Tom Byron, fuck I am truly not worthy of this honor. Thanks for taking the time. I have to ask a guy in porn,( esp. one that has over 30 years of films) have you ever went down on a chick, and she smelt so rank..if so what do you do..do you tell her?

TB: Thankfully, that's usually not a problem. When it is, I handle it discreetly. Not everyone does, though

2. How can dating a regular chick do anything for you, when you sleep with hot girls all day in movies?

TB: I really don't date regular girls. Everyone I come in contact with it seems has some connection to the biz... I'll tell you one thing. My schedule lately doesn't seem to allow much time for socializing in general.

Movie Review: [Rec] 3: Genesis (Blu-ray, Momentum Pictures)

Reviewed by James DePaolo

(Rec)3 takes the illness out of the apartment complex of the first two and moves it to a wedding reception. The first twenty minutes or so of this film takes us via handheld video cameras on the big day of Koldo and Clara, we get to watch the pre wedding, the wedding and most of the reception. Where part 2 was just to the point and felt people understood the situation and premise, this film decided to build the story of the lovers and make us feel invested when things do start to go down. Unlike, the other two Rec films this one is more of a steady cam, instead of the usual shaky. While the reception is going on and everyone is having fun it seems to take a turn for the worst when an uncle who was bitten outside is possessed, and falls from the ceiling and starts to bite people. When all the chaos break out, which you know will, the bride and groom get separated and forced to go into different directions. Whereas the other two Rec films have been more about searching and trying to quarantine the virus and people infected, this one is more about survival and love.

Interview: Wild Eye Releasing's Keith Crocker

1. A lot has changed since the last time we pleasantly chatted, Wild Eye Releasing is getting a lot of press these days and even mainstream press. You and Rob seem to have grown leaps and bounds lately, are you guys surprised?

A. No, we aren’t surprised at all. We are a specialty label, we bring hand selected titles to the viewer based upon popularity of the subject matter. We carefully consider every title we release, we don’t base it on genre (be it horror or sex), we base it on the subject matter and the execution of the cinematic process. These days documentaries are doing us great, perfect examples being The Death of Andy Kaufman and Unauthorized – The Story of Rock & Roll Comics.

Frankenhooker (Arrow, Blu-ray)

Reviewed by James DePaolo

Plot - From Frank Henenlotter, (Basket Case trilogy, Bad Biology and Brain Damage). When Jeffrey Franken’s fiancée is chopped to pieces by the blades of a lawnmower, he attempts to bring her back to life. He starts using the body parts of hookers, and resurrects her during a storm. And as fate would have it, Elizabeth goes down 42nd street as a prostitute and killing her customers.

Review - Like always if it has the Arrow Films label you know it's more than likely going to be a fine restoration. The transfer is incredible. I remember in 1990 going to a art house theater on campus at college with some friends, to see this film and walking out just all night talking about this film and how fun it was. Sad, this is the last film ex pin up girl Patty Mullen made. What a year for Frank. The re-release of Basket Case and now this. All of you ” new school” horror fans, that want something to have fun with your friends with, look no further. 21 years old, and watching this film you do not feel this film is dated. ( now Basket Case is another story) Henenlotter isn’t the only reason the film is a success. The film’s two main actors are also perfectly cast. This film just has cult classic written all over it.

Movie Review: Spy Kids: All The Time In The World (2011, Blu-ray)

Reviewed By James DePaolo

In 2001, Robert Rodriguez set out to make a junior league James Bond film intended for kids. It followed the Cortez family, who were a family of spies. Using gadgets that were more Inspector Gadget inspired, than James Bond. I admit I had a good time with the first film. By the time, it got to the third. You can tell the ideas were just getting tired and inspiration was more like a lazy retread of the other two films. The title fit it right. Game Over.

TV on DVD Review: Sigmund and the Sea Monsters: Season One

By James DePaolo

As a very young kid in the early 70's, Saturday Mornings to me were the day of magic. From cartoons to children shows, that magic box in the middle of the living room floor kept my attention. And easily for my parents the best babysitter. To get to visit my childhood one more time was interesting. Sid and Marty Krofft created many fun family shows for Saturday morning television to capture many kids and young adults imagination, and among them was the vastly popular H.R Pufnstuf and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. Sigmund, is the story of a sea creature named oddly enough, Sigmund, who leaves his family's cave by the ocean and is taken in by two kids who adopt him. Rip Taylor has an appearance as one of the characters as Sheldon the Sea Genie, along with the other characters Sigmund Ooze played by Billy Barty. Johnny and Scott Stuart are played by Johnny Whitaker and Scott Kolden.

Interview: Wild Eye Releasing's Keith Crocker

James DePaolo locks horns with cult film director and Wild Eye Releasing president Keith Crocker. These guys let it all hang out folks. Enjoy!

Find Wild Eye Releasing on Amazon.com

1. At Wild Eye, what is your and Rob's mission statement?

KJC: James, our mission statement is very simple. To deliver quality, independent cinema to the movie aficionado who has watched all the lame garbage that passes for independent cinema these days. Bear in mind that QUALITY is the key word here, we are not offering lame, shot in one-week video product that makes a lame attempt to compete with Hollywood product simply by being “polished”. If you look at all the titles that have been released, each one was hand picked out of countless submissions. We stand behind all these titles personally; I can give you countless reasons why they are heads and shoulders above the rest of the offerings out there. As far as my personal mission statement as a filmmaker, whatever I make is done in the services of the humanities. The bulk of the people in my immediate family are social workers. My films are my contributions to humanity. They are pieces of a puzzle that at the time of my death should be viewed as one huge road map to life. It’s the only way I can make a difference in this life. The two films that I am currently trying to pick up financing for are Three Slices of Delirium and Rasputin on Campus. The Three Slices of Delirium promo trailer is already done, the Rasputin on Campus trailer is shot but still being edited. Three Slices is a period piece in the tradition of Brothers Grimm only grimmer. But there is not one story in that anthology that no one will be able to not relate to. Rasputin is very different in its approach, but it signifies the way things never change, at least not completely. We are all sort of locked in a whirlpool where things appear to change but in reality nothing really happens that can qualify as change. Anyhow, I hope I haven’t bored you. I can make a “big dick” joke if you’d like?

TV on DVD Review: Stan Lee's Superhumans: Season One (2010)

Superhumans is a reality show where hosts Stan Lee and Daniel Browning Smith travel the world in search of individuals with unique genetic deficiencies.

Buy Stan Lee's Superhumans on DVD

Is it just me, or does Stan Lee put his name on almost anything these days? When this originally aired on the History Channel, I will not lie to you, I never watched one episode. At this time, Stan Lee's name seemed to be on other shows that I was not a fan of. Boy, am I an idiot. This show is fun.

In this two disc set, you have eight episodes where people try to show you their talents and superhuman traits, as in one episode about a guy who could break cinder blocks with his head. Then, when they doubt that he is superhuman, they do an MRI to reveal his skull is thicker than the usual skull.
