Movie Review: Tusk (2014)

It's no secret to anyone who knows me or listens to the podcasts I've been on that I am a huge Kevin Smith fan.  From the first time I watched Clerks I was enthralled with his work.

I finally got around to watching Tusk and at first I wasn't sure what I thought of it.  There's the Kevin Smith humor but it's mixed in with a little bit of a Human Centipede-esque type of film.

Tusk is about an obnoxious podcast host(Justin Long) who travels to Canada to interview an internet sensation.  Unfortunately for him, he is unable to get the interview but he finds out about another person(Michael Parks) who seems like he may be interesting to talk to as well.  Things don't go well and the podcast host will go through some serious changes.

Smith is able to get the most out of the actors in this film.  Michael Parks is masterful as the walrus aficionado.  Justin Long plays his part as the podcast host as excellently as well.  As with most Kevin Smith films, the cameos are fun to watch for(I didn't even recognize Johnny Depp, guess I better watch it again).  The Canadian humor is funny as well.

As for the film itself, it wasn't exactly my favorite.  That's not to say I didn't enjoy the film, it's just not one I would watch regularly.  It's definitely worth checking out but be warned, it's not for those of you with a weak stomach.

On a scale of one to five, Tusk recieves Four Pile Drivers.

Please comment below and let us know what you thought of Tusk.

Movie Review: Tusk (2014; Demarest Films/SModcast Pictures)

...once upon a time, if some might fondly recall, there was an absolute 'looney' tale of a certain stuttering pig, ambitiously seeking out the notorious and ever-evasive Do-Do bird...a mad, screwball creature, capable of changing & altering the visual and environmental perspective, far and above that of the 'normally' manipulative, cartoon-flavored perspective, in an effort to evade detection and capture...oh, hell, if at the very least, to gleefully f**k with his hapless, would-be pursuers. Anyways, at a certain point of his arduous search, our intrepid adventurer...uh, for the sake of arguement, let's just call him 'Porky', 'kay??...comes across a rather striking sign of destination, marking the border...itself, marked with a sign that says 'slippery when wet'...between the cartoon's 'natural' reality, and the surreal, mad, hallucinogenic, albeit ironic world, where the elusive Do-Do is reputed to reside (...'snicker'...that 'rubber band' always seems to stick out in my mind, for some reason). "Welcome to Wackyland", the sign reads, where "...it can happen, here!!"...

...cutting to the chase, and thusly, this viewer's point...yes, folks!! Welcome to 'wackyland'...where indeed, it can happen here. Only, in the case of writer/director Kevin Smith's latest departure from his sometimes angst, often poignant, pop-culture savvy, and invariably comical New Jersey-based exploits...namely, a skewed, horror-themed venture, called "Tusk"...'wackyland', and the film's unconventional Canadian setting...well, if one truly considers it, the former and the latter really don't seem all that far removed from each other, in Kevin's eyes...much to the benefit, intrigue and chagrin of those privy to the new film, as you shall soon see...

FEARnet Presents A "Reaper" Reunion Special

Hello everyone,

This is Jacob O'Neal from The Gorram Nerd Hour. Kevin Moyers had asked me to come over to Cinema Head Cheese to do a guest review for the blog. Knowing I am a huge fan of the short lived CW series Reaper he gave me the screener that was sent to him by the great folks at FEARnet. It started with a reunion special and then went into the pilot episode. The reunion special was roughly about a half hour and started with the four main cast members (Bret Harrison, Tyler Labine, Ray Wise & Rick Gonzalez) being interviewed about their time on the series. Later they were joined by Christine Willies, Ken Marino and the creators of the show Tara Butters & Michelle Fazakis.

What first struck me about this reunion was that each of the actors seemed to genuinely love their characters, miss the show and each other.  In fact, Ray Wise was dressed in a suit with one of the original neck ties from the show. Willies came out wearing horns and immediately began talking about her make out session with Labine on the show. Labine and Harrison both expressed their great love for the show and how the fans blamed them for why they didn't get a third season. The CW dragged their feet on renewing the show and each of those actors took pilots for new series. They also speculate as to whether that's the reason their other shows didn't do very well. Hell hath no fury like a Reaper fan scorned. Take that, Sons Of Tucson!

Movie Review: Jay and Silent Bob Get Irish (2013)

Many know the story behind this show, but for those who don't, I'll give you a quick rundown. As Kevin Smith began the transformation from filmmaker to podcaster, his friend Jason Mewes was dealing with a relapse. As a way to keep Jay on the right path, Smith started a live podcast called Jay and Silent Bob Get Old. This made Jay accountable to an audience, as he announces his days sober at every show. Years later, the duo tours the globe performing live. I enjoyed the first DVD, Tea Bagging in the UK, and this was even better.

Movie Review: Jay and Silent Bob Get Old - Tea Bagging in the UK (2012)

Kevin Smith fans are already aware of his network of podcasts, but if you don't listen to Jay and Silent Bob Get Old, you don't know that it's more than an average show. After Jason Mewes, a recovering heroine addict, had a relapse with Vicodin, his wife asked Kevin Smith for help, and Mewes was sent to rehab. When he got out, he needed to be held accountable. Mewes tried podcasting before with Mewescast, but that didn't last. Smith had an idea. He would give Mewes an audience to share his life stories, and during every show, he'd have to share how many days he's been sober with the live audience. It worked, and it made for an interesting podcast.

Movie Review: Red State (2011)

I've often said that nobody can go into a dark place like a comedian can. You might think of him as a writer, director, or more recently, a podcaster, but if you really look at everything he's done, Kevin Smith is a comedian. From Clerks to SModcast, everything he's done has involved comedy, whether it's in writing or directing, the occasional acting gig or his live Q&A sessions. When I heard that Kevin Smith wrote and directed a horror film, I was extremely excited. Every good comedian eventually ends up in a dark place. Sometimes it's in real life, but thankfully it often manifests itself in brilliant entertainment.

Beyond Silent Bob

Kevin Smith (left) with lifelong sidekick Jason Mewes
Kevin Smith is known for changing the independent film world. Nobody can deny that. With a meager budget by Hollywood standards, Smith and his producing partner Scott Mosier created a cult classic with a handful of unknown actors and a convenience store in New Jersey. With five follow-up films, comic books, an action figure line and a prime time cartoon series behind them, it seems that the Clerks crew may have run its course. But where else can Kevin Smith go?

While Jay and Silent Bob seem to be his eternal legacy, Kevin Smith is quietly taking on more than most people could handle.

Six Degrees of Cheese: Best and Worst Kevins

As a Kevin, I share one of the most popular baby names of the seventies with many people my age. I have known a few, and one is even a friend since we were ten. After hearing something about Kevin Garnett, I had the strange idea that there weren't many Kevins in the public eye. I really struggled to name many. Of course, thinking of one Celtic led me to Kevin McHale, and the Boston connection to Kevin Faulk. I thought of Kevin Johnson and Kevin Kolb. All athletes. Well, what about the actors, comics and musicians? All I could think of was Kevin Arnold, but he's just a fictional character. This sent me off on a stupid search. I had to find the best and worst Kevins in entertainment history and post them here. I truly am an idiot for this one.

The Adam Carolla Podcast

After taking over for Howard Stern on the Western half of the country, Carolla's show was an ever-changing entity. Once he moved into the podcast world, he started with one-on-one interviews and eventually got the crew from his morning show back together. Complete with news, Bald Bryan's sound effects and even Dawson's weed laced announcing, Carolla is back in business on his terms with his daily podcast.
