Movie Review: Darkman (Blu-ray, 1990)

When Sam Raimi bursted on the horror scene in 1981 with the classic Evil Dead (1981), it was inevitable that respect for the talent of this young writer / director would bring Raimi a new level that would propel his career in the genre film ranks. The Evil Dead captivated horror fans all over the world and even caught the eye of the legendary Stephen King. Amazingly, it wasn’t until his 1987 sequel, Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn where he really started to get his career into top gear. Just a couple years later Raimi was able to direct his most ambitious project at the time, the superhero / Phantom of the Opera mash-up Darkman. After the success of Darkman, Raimi’s career was given a new life that would make him into box office gold with the Spiderman trilogy.

Scream Factory has been no stranger in grabbing the right to some of the finer genre films from the past few decades. Fans of Darkman will be happy to know that thanks to Scream Factory and Shout! Factory you can now see Darkman looking better than ever in the High-def format with all kinds of fun supplementary materials.

Movie Review: Marvel Knights: Wolverine - Origin (2013, DVD)

Review By: Rob Sibley

Wolverine is the best there is at what he does; although of course, what he doe isn't very nice. But long before he was a member of the X-men, a tormented experiment of the Weapon-X project, or even a savage bar brawler known as Logan, he was simply a young boy. What incredible forces created this man, the world's greatest killing machine? For years, Wolverine has searched desperately for answers from his past, from the wilds of the Canadian Wilderness to the teeming cities of Japan and beyond. And despite his perseverance and longing for the truth, he remains an enigma to himself and those around him. But, in this landmark event, Marvel reveals all: the birth and childhood of a young boy... the intriguing secrets of his family history... and the tragedy that changed everything. Welcome to the greatest story never told...

So reads the back jacket of the DVD, big words for sure. That is a lot of hype for a motion comic to live up to. Luckily this motion comic was adapted from the amazing 6 issue story “Wolverine: Origin”. Which finally revealed Logan's mysterious past. Before I discuss the actual film, I must admit I usually hate motion comics with a passion.

Movie Review: The Story of Rock 'N' Roll Comics (2012)

Anyone who visited a comic book shop in the 1990s has to remember the slew of independent titles that suddenly showed up. Whether it was Razor or Evil Ernie or anything in between, they changed our view of the comic industry. The little guy could do something on his own, even if the writing or art were sub-par. There was a section of books to the left of the register at our local comic store. That's where the adult themed and just plain odd books ended up. That's the first place I saw Rock 'N' Roll Comics.

The artwork was bad, and the writing was usually worse, and that would be enough to make me leave them on the shelf, but they were about some of my favorite bands. Todd Loren, founder of the fledgling comic book company, didn't care who got mad at him. He was determined to publish his books unauthorized, and as the covers always read, he was proud of it.

Interview: Gary Friedrich, creator of Ghost Rider

Kevin Moyers at Wizard World Chicago 2011 with the great Gary Friedrich

Back in August of 2011, I was able to interview Ghost Rider creator Gary Friedrich at Wizard World Chicago. He was very gracious and one hell of a nice guy. We filmed it, but unfortunately, the audio is terrible due to the noise coming from the crowd around a two story t-shirt booth nearby. In light of the recent situation with Mr. Friedrich and Disney/Marvel, I figured I should go back and let you hear from the man himself. I did my best to transcribe what we filmed, and this is what I could manage. I hope you enjoy this short little interview.

The comic book creator community is stepping up behind Gary Friedrich, and leading that charge is Steve Niles. If you’d like to assist Mr. Friedrich in his plight, or you’d like to know more about the situation, head over to http://www.steveniles.com/gary.html.

Kevin Moyers: This was my favorite comic growing up. This was the only comic book I ever really read. Now, what gave you the idea for Ghost Rider?

Gary Friedrich: When I was a kid, I was reading several different comics. I went to the movies and saw The Wild Ones with Marlon Brando. That was the first motorcycle gang movie ever, and I immediately thought up the idea of a superhero on a motorcycle.

Movie Review: Richie Rich's Christmas Wish (1998)

Welcome to Day 5 in the David Hayes 12 Days of Christmas Crap Review-a-Palooza. My cup runneth over with turd-like movies and I feel the need, this holiday season to, share it with all of you. Suckers.
On the fifth day of Christmas, the Head Cheese gave to me… five go-o-olden showers (or at least that is what watching this movie felt like).
When I was growing up my family wasn’t wealthy (I could spout off and talk about how rich in love we were, but you cynics wouldn’t believe me anyway).  We had food and a house and clothes and Christmas presents and all that stuff, but we weren’t filthy stinking rich. We understood that Christmas was a time of caring and sharing and, when all is said and done, you should be able to look yourself in the mirror at the end of the year and know that you’ve been a good person. When you’re the richest little barf bag in the world, though, you don’t need that mirror. In fact, you don’t need any mirrors because there are endless lines of servants ready to tell you just how good you are so you can give them a 2% raise and they can finally fix the cracked toilet seat that’s been pinching the ass of their family the entire year… uuh, sorry. I’ve gotten a little worked up after watching Richie Rich’s Christmas Wish. Anyone would.

Movie Review: TMNT (2007)

When I was a kid, I wasn't a huge Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan until the first live action film was released. I really liked the creative costumes and sense of humor. It really grabbed me and made me a fan for life. The sequels (yes, including the terrible one with Vanilla Ice) were also fun. I was excited about the turtle quartet returning to the big screen, but I wish that it had been in a live action format

Buy TMNT on Blu-ray or DVD

The story starts out with the turtles in four different places in life. It's a nice little reminder that we haven't seen them in awhile. The only one still fighting crime is Rafael, and he does it under a pseudonym. Casey Jones eventually joins him, and with time, the remaining brothers get into the act.

Comic Book Review: The Clown & Tea Cup Show #2

One of the goals for me at Wizard World Chicago was to find some interesting indie comic books. Having worked on a few myself, I know what goes into getting them made. I think that's why I was so intrigued with the story behind The Clown & Tea Cup Show #2. Specifically the second issue. Why? Because the whole thing was written and drawn in twenty-four hours. I had to see what a book done so quickly would be like.

We start out with a clown named Cactus Joe and his robot brother, Broken Tea Cup. They are joined by a penguin named Pengy. Simple enough. A large breasted woman hires the trio, who also happen to be detectives, to find her husband, who she suspects is cheating on her. This leads our heroes into a world of chaos and craziness.

David also gets into an all out wrasslin' style war with former wrestler Virgil, and he enlists the help of some familiar folks.

Don't forget to check our YouTube channel for more from our trip, including artist Edmond Lee, the folks at Kill Vampire Lincoln Productions and Kevin's fanboy moment interviewing Ghost Rider creator Gary Friedrich.

What's Your Favorite Indie Shop or Theater?

Recently, I think we hit on a theme here at the Cheese. I decided to write about the end of the video store. It seemed appropriate, as I have seen many Blockbuster locations preparing to shut down in the wake of Netflix and Redbox. I remember the mom and pop places doing the same when big blue came to town.

After that, Lacey Paige let us know about a few survivors up in Canada. Our readers have been all over our articles, especially Lacey's, and that made me think.

Cinema Head Cheese is an independent voice. David, Jeff and I put this together ourselves, and then we were joined by other independent thinkers. Hal Astell, James DePaulo and Lacey all have their own independent sites. Ron Ford makes indie films. They and the rest of the crew give us their time and talent, and we appreciate it.

We three founders are no strangers to the independent game. Between us we have a few books, several comic book series, a comedy album, blogs, trailer compilations, two radio shows, a podcast and a stack of movies ranging from horror to thriller to comedy. We know how hard it can be to make things work.

With that being said, I'm building a new Directory page on the website. I'd like to showcase the places we all love to visit, and I'd like your help. If you know about a great independent video store, book store, comic book store or grindhouse theater, please email us at cinemaheadcheese@yahoo.com. Put "Directory Addition" in the subject line.

Please send the following information:
Store name
Street address
Phone number
Website
Type of business

Listings will be alphabetical by state in the US, by province in Canada, and by country for the rest of the world.

Movie Review: The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special (2002)

Day 6 of the David Hayes 12 Days of Christmas Crap Review-a-Palooza is in the books and I just had to take a break. I couldn’t wade through anymore holiday dreck and so I thought I’d expose y’all to a little comic book-inspired awesomeness.

On the sixth day of Christmas, the Head Cheese gave to me… six fraggin’ bastiches!
For those of you who are unaware, I am a HUGE comic book fan. Personally, I think it is the perfect medium. You don’t have to deal with diva actors and giant budgets. If I want to blow up Jupiter, I can blow up Jupiter. If I want a zombie attack in the middle of the Battle of Gettysburg… I get what I want without any issues. That is why the comic book is so freaking cool. With that said, the comics I tend to read are a little, well, they are equally as off as I am. In the 1990s and early 2000s, though, no other character took root in my heart like Lobo. The last surviving member of his race (because he killed the rest), professional ass-whooper for hire and all around hip psychopath. Originally a part of the Omega Men series, Lobo found a home in L.E.G.I.O.N. before he proved far too popular, and got a revamp by writer/artists extraordinaire Alan Grant and Keith Giffen. Lobo’s solo comic book debut was in a single issue one-shot called The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special.

Movie Review: Vamperotica: Tales from the Bloodvault (2010)

by David Hayes

Vamperotica: Tales from the Bloodvault is another entry in the hugely successful comic book-to-film formula. Don't expect Spider-Man style effects or Road to Perdition type drama… but get ready for a fun little exercise in the large-breasted vampire genre. The title alone is undeniable proof of "what you see is what you get." Written and directed by Vamperotica comic creator, Kirk Lindo, Tales tells the, well, tale of b-movie producer Nicky, the money he owes to the mob and the one last epic he produces (in a single night no less) about a sexy and evil Vampire Queen (played by the always buxom Glori Anne Gilbert who could, if she concentrates really hard, breast feed an entire third world nation). Little does Nicky know that the Vampire Queen actress is a real vampire (and not a "natural" like Nicky thinks). The feature comes in at a lean 80 minutes.

Game Review: Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (2008)

by Zack Anderson

Okay, okay. It's got repetitive combat, weak voice acting and the game world changes irrevocably as you progress. I've heard all the complaints and it took me a while to play this game, but I'm glad I finally did.
I've been a Spider-Gamer since number 2, so I loves me a good swing through NYC. Web of Shadows has that in spades. The web-zip has never been easier, and the aerial evade move makes Spidey almost fly.

I admit that the mission structure can be a bit repetitive, (you save the day by beating up everybody) but the fighting itself is varied enough that if you're creative you can end up pulling off some amazing moves. Comparing the combat to earlier games, Web of Shadows actually comes out on top in my view.
