Movie Review: Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman's Fantastic Four (2016)

Comic book films are ALL the rage right now. Superheroes are coming at us from all angles: comics, film, TV novelizations… everywhere. Arguably, Marvel Comics has been the most successful. The Avengers, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Captain America, Spider-man… all of these titles are in the vernacular of American conversations. The family that started the Marvel Comics Universe the 1960s has had their share of film versions. The Fantastic Four: Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Girl (now Woman), The Thing and The Human Torch have had multiple animated television shows and, to date, four feature films. The most recent, from Fox, have been critical and financial failures. It was a 1990s production by Roger Corman that has been called the BEST Fantastic Four film made to date and on a very low budget. That film has never been released. In Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four, we finally learn what happened to the film that never saw the light of day.

Movie Review: Man of Steel (2013, Warner Bros.)

...(...a word of friendly warning: Normally, in reviewing films herein this venue, this viewer typically endeavors to ever so much keep as much of the content of a movie, a surprise to the potential viewer...trying not to give too much away. However, in the case of THIS particular film, considering the unconventional non-linear storytelling involved, as well as the overall general familiarity of this pop culture icon, giving SOME things away seemed somewhat unavoidable, though not altogether totally unveiling. However, if you have not afforded yourself the chance to see "Man of Steel" yet, please be aware of SOME spoilers ahead...JHB)...

Movie Review: X-Men: First Class (2011)

Hey, look. We're sorry about that whole The Last Stand thing. Oh, and Wolverine? Yeah, we really don't know what happened there. Just, please, let us make it up to you. We'd like to extend a goodwill gesture. It has an origin story, and uh, oh, just to make sure it's good, we let the guy who made Kick-Ass direct it. I know, right? So, we really hope you'll accept our apology, and just for kicks, we'll throw in Kevin Bacon. We cool?

Buy X-Men: First Class [Blu-ray] or DVD

That's basically what it felt like the people at Marvel were saying when they served up X-Men: First Class. As for me, apology accepted. Origin stories can be great, or they can be ham-fisted attempts at explaining every detail of a character's being. This was very smooth and organic. Several origin questions are answered, and it all stays true to the preceding trilogy. This is not a reboot or remake. This is a prequel in the same line of films. This movie actually fits into the X-Men series quite well.

Movie Review: V for Vendetta (2006)

Alan Moore is never a happy guy when it comes to his comic books being turned into films. Considering how League of Extraordinary Gentlemen turned out, I don't blame him. The Watchmen was another tough call, but it was far better. I haven't actually read any of the books, but taking them just as movies,  I think Moore should really be happy with V.

Buy V for Vendetta on DVD or Blu-ray

I think that most guys can get into the idea of being a vigilante. That's why characters like Batman and Kick-Ass are appealing. It's also a bit romantic in the classical sense to be anti-establishment like Robin Hood. Just the thought of single-handedly bringing down a corrupt government induces a hard-on that Keith Olbermann would be proud of.
