Movie Review: A Touch of Genie (1974)

Nebbish Melvin Finkelfarb’s (Doug Stone) life revolves around to tending to his Antique/Junk shop, being berated by his yenta mother (Ultramax) and sneaking off to Times Square to catch the latest skin flicks. Finding a discarded vase in an alleyway, Melvin “rubs” it in an intimate manner and out pops a sprightly female genie (Chris Jordan) who grants him five wishes. Melvin’s wishes are to take the male roles in various hot sex scenes with his favorite adult actors and actresses. This is represented by such skin flick regulars as Harry Reems, Marc Stevens, Eric Edwards and plain Jane Tina Russell boffing away on a $1.98 harem set. All well and good, but these scenes are interrupted with Melvin’s mother barging her way in to join in the action! Paging Dr. Freud? All’s well that ends well.

As Joe Sarno and Doris Wishman scholar Michael Bowen points out in his interview included on this Vinegar Syndrome DVD and Blu-Ray combo, A Touch of Genie was Sarno’s second reluctant attempt at hardcore – and it shows it. Many cast and crew members hide behind pseudonyms and the actors doing the “comedic” scenes are kept separate from the actors getting to the nitty-gritty (with the exception of Ultramax and Russell, who appears briefly as a strait-laced virgin). Bowen also rightly points out that A Touch of Genie is self-reflexive on the porn genre in general, where those stuck in undeclared celibacy live vicariously through the actors on the Blue Screen.

Back Room Blues: A Tribute to Smut Palace Insanity

You’ve seen it; we’ve all seen it. (Well at least those of us enough huevos to admit it.) You’re at the local video store and greeting your line of vision is the back room door, it’s seclusion promising you sights that may tantalize you, turn you on, or even scare the living bejeesuz out of you. Well unless you have time traveling powers or an exceptional video store, you will be greeted with scores of generic faces and bodies being pried open and splattered with semen. Worst of all is that none of these porn clones have the decency to even look like they are into it. At all. It’s like getting psyched up for a blind date with an exotic stranger and being greeted by your old Science teacher naked and with a dingus up his butt. Gross, wrong, and ultimately disappointing.

Movie Review: Blue Ice (1985)

Since we’ve e been promised by a certain individual that America will be great again, this little porno chestnut unearthed by the fine folks at Vinegar Syndrome reminds us once again what makes America great: Third-rate Humphrey Bogart world-weary detectives and their ponderous narration … reliable Nazi villains who can't seem to keep their swastika armbands on straight … purty girls that upon analysis aren't all that purty … sex scenes involving lots of shouting and yelling … dramatic scenes involving lots of shouting and yelling … beautiful locations of San Francisco rendered with ragged camera swish pans. Yes! We're in the kooky alternative universe that is Blue Ice, as helmed by the notorious director Philip Marshak (The Nightmare Never Ends, aka Cataclysm and Dracula Sucks!).

The story? You got us there, pal! Famed skin flick hunk and lunk Herschel Savage stars as the aforementioned gumshoe contracted by said Nazis to find a rare book of ultimate power. Savage wanders in and out fleshy situations that don't forward the plot. His hooker roommate services “Hedgehog” himself Ron Jeremy, there's lots of screaming and yelling, while reliable schlong Paul Thomas stumbles about in an alcoholic haze, winding up trussed up and tortured by said Nazis. The least eagle-eyed viewer will note that Thomas, kept bound in bed rests his arms in two hooks without any restraint whatsoever keeping them there! You suppose the doofus secretly likes it? Exotic “Helga Sven,” a Germanic platinum blonde by way of Tulsa, Oklahoma sings a passable version of “Deutschland Uber Alles,” and the sought-after book, an ungainly prop full of Bedazzler beads is opened, referencing 1955's Kiss Me Deadly long before Quentin Tarrantino did so in Pulp Fiction (1996). We haven't even mentioned the plain-Jane 300-year-old witch who concludes the film with a painfully dated laser light show. Longtime skull-faced screen villain Reggie Nalder (Salem’s Lot) appears as a guest Nazi poobah, and thankfully remains fully clothed ….

Movie Review: Erotic Adventures of Candy/Candy Goes to Hollywood (Blu-ray)

It seems that all types of adult entertainment (be it soft or hardcore erotica) have put on display some memorable mammaries…or in very simple terms, boobies. The natural jug is something special though. Don’t get me wrong there have been some fine pairs of fake boobs in adult cinema but, to me, nothing beats a good soft, squishy, hypnotizing natural rack that hangs off a gal’s torso. Christy Canyon, Seka, and Ushi Digard are some true favorites that no doubt “bare” that top-notch bosom. I had never seen the lovely Carol Conners until I took gander at Vinegar Syndrome’s latest XXX double-bill, Gail Palmer’s Erotic Adventures of Candy and Candy Goes to Hollywood until recently and I must say that this Golden Age babe is right up there with those other lovely top-heavy honeys.

Movie Review: 42nd Street Forever: Peepshow Collection Volume 3 and 4

It's amazing to think how far we have come when it comes to accessing quality material to get off to. Nowadays, if you're by yourself and looking to squeeze a goopy load to some hot chicks or dudes or whatever all it takes one or two pecks at the keyboard at your taken endless options to make your mess. There was a time when actual adult theaters theaters featured full-length films and loops. While pornographic feature films really just caught on around the early 70's with Deep Throat -- xxx rated loops have been given many an opportunity to choke the bald man into the turtle soup.

Synapse Films' super sleazy sub-label Impulse Pictures have shown a lot lately to make fans of golden age porn happy...now though, they've taken to handling loop compilations with their releases in the 42nd Street Forever: Peepshow Collection. The most recent additions to the collection are volumes three and four which include fifteen outrageous sex loops from the 70's and early 80's. If you think you can handle it here's a look at both!

Volume three serves up a grouping of loops that have plenty of interesting highlights. We get to see a young John Holmes slap around his mammoth python with a young gal. Before he pummels the lass from behind a bunch of butter to the area. Does this help dull the pain? We'll never know because all you can hear is the projector running as is the norm for every single loop on these collections.

Movie Review: Baby Rosemary (1976) and Hot Lunch (1978)

Vinegar Syndrome wipes off a couple of shot-on-film XXX favorites that are, uh, more interesting than most. Both Baby Rosemary and Hot Lunch were directed by John Hayes, who directed the quirky Garden of the Dead and Grave of the Vampire. Under the name of Howard Perkins, Hayes would helm hardcore porn, giving these features a bit more attention than they probably deserved.

Baby Rosemary is unconnected with Roman Polanski’s horror classic Rosemary’s Baby (1968), although it has distinct horror elements. Sharon Thorpe plays Rosemary, a most unappealing female lead. With her dishrag personality and frequently dirty hair, still outgrowing a blonde dye job, she blue-balls her boyfriend Jon (John Leslie). Not to worry – John just hoofs it across town to a prostitute (Leslie Bovee) for some relief. The next day, Rosemary goes to visit her estranged father at a San Francisco flophouse – where she is raped at knifepoint by her father’s neighbors Ken Scudder and Monique Cardin! Rosemary decides she likes it and begins to see Scudder romantically where he brutalizes her a second time. She’s saved by John, now in his day job as a police officer!

No, it doesn’t make any sense – remember, this is a porno film! Rosemary’s father has passed, and she is asked to formally identify him at the coroner’s office. Now a teacher at an all girl’s school, two of Rosemary’s prize students, played by Candida Royalle and Melba Bruce, drop to their knees to offer up a pagan prayer involving a Priapic god. Visiting a funeral home, Rosemary’s two students ball a mortuary attendant in a room with classic horror movie posters tacked to the wall.

Movie Review: Wakefield Poole's Bijou

As a long time admirer of classic adult features I've come to really respect the work of the folks at Vinegar Syndrome for their ability to put forth an increasingly versatile catalog. There are some interesting adult oriented gems from filmmakers itching for re-discovery and it's important that there are some companies that can take charge in releasing these films in quality presentations. Directors like Carter Steven, Phil Prince, Henry Paris and Armand Weston are a handful of quality golden age directors that I've become fond of over the years - all who need their films brought back to the DVD and Blu-ray format. I'm going to add a new one to the mix in Wakefield Poole (Wakefield Poole's Bible). Wakefield Poole’s hardcore gay feature Bijou has just been released by the Vinegar Syndrome and, well…let’s just say it’s a unique experience.

Bijou opens innocently enough with an interesting mix of three different perspectives – a man driving his car, a mustachioed construction worker walking home from work and a woman crossing a street. The three all come together in not so fortunate circumstances with the driver striking the woman with his car. Our construction worker witnesses this event and promptly takes the injured and possibly dead woman’s purse.

Impulse Pictures Brings on the Memories, and the Mammaries, with Two Flicks from 1973 and 1974, the Years of the Deuce!

Mary Ellen and Sally, two lovely maids at a local hotel, are tired of their boring, dead-end cleaning jobs.  To liven up their work, these two horny honeys decide to give the guests a little extra “room service.” When some honeymooners and businessmen arrive, the humping and bumping gets even hotter for our heroines as the night goes on.  In the morning, will they decide to keep their jobs after all?

The amateurish camerawork, microphone shadows, elevator music, terribly recorded sound and “you are there” extreme sex close-ups, will bring you back to the days when adult films were cheap and fast and VERY sleazy.  Re-mastered from a scratchy, barely surviving, theatrical print, THE CHAMBERMAIDS is a steamy slice of 70’s sex cinema that will have you cleaning up your own room after you watch it! 

Interracial Sex Havoc Part #3: 1975

We continue our journey through interracial sex in the movies, and this time we’ll take a look at films from 1975. Not all films included here are pornographic, but they had to have at least one interracial sex scene in order to qualify. For this chapter I wrote about plenty of golden age porn [one including legend John Holmes], a couple of art films [one by Pier Paolo Pasolini] and more. So, enjoy!

La bête (1975)

This English, French, Italian co-production is set in France and it concerns the adventures of the title’s beast which is raping women in the woods. Bestiality you say, but all I see is a man in a suit. There are a lot of horses fucking each other in this film too. I wish I was making this up.

The director’s name (Walerian Borowczyk) says a lot to some people, but I am not a fan of his work. Anyway, this exploitative “art” film contains several interracial sex scenes between a sexy white girl and a black servant [Hassane Fall]. Those are always interrupted and the poor girl has to masturbate afterwards, but said scenes don’t seem pornographic when compared to the sequences described in the above paragraph. The humour is also lame, and the icing on the cake is a disgusting masturbation scene that involves a rose. I’m grossed.

Count the Ways (1975)

Cunt the ways! I always wanted to write that. Now, on with the film... It was written and directed by Ann Perry and when it doesn’t focus on hardcore sex scenes, it looks like a decent exploitation movie from its era.

The story revolves around a teacher who loves his poetry, but above all loves young flesh (well, not so young judging by the apparent age of the female stars). The first (rather quick) sex scene happens between him and one of his students. They start to make out in soft-core fashion, then the shot goes out of focus, then in focus again and the thing becomes hardcore.

The second sex scene happens in the back of a van between a moustached man and a hot girl. It’s actually hot and impressive considering how risky it was to film it as the van’s windows were open and the vehicle was driven in the middle of a busy highway. You can see other cars passing by, whilst obviously their drivers had no idea they’d become part of classic smut history. It’s amazing how this film doesn’t stick to cheap interiors, unlike much of the era’s crap quickies.

Anyway, a bit later, the van’s student couples go in a cabin where they fuck each other’s brains out, whilst the moustached guy wears Super-Man underwear. And here we have the film’s only interracial scene of interest: it happens between a white guy and a black girl.

The film’s hottest scene though happens between a black man and a black girl who get it on in a bathtub. Her breasts are gorgeous beyond belief.

And there’s also a scene in which the teacher is fucking a student in the snow. I’m not sure how he managed to get a hard-on in such a freezing environment, but he did. I’m sure they got pneumonia from the stunt though.

The last scene is quite arty and it reminded me of the late-night ‘90s soft-core TV movies, only this is hardcore.

Movie Review: Barbara Broadcast (Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack)

If you've had the opportunity of catching the remastered DVD and Blu-ray releases of Radley Metzger's adult features from Distripix / Video-X-Pix like The Opening of Misty Beethoven, The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann and Maraschino Cherry you've come to expect a quality of care that's rarely seen by other adult movie distributors. The recent release of the three disc DVD/ Blu-ray combo pack of Metzger's Barbara Broadcast carries on what those fine titles had going for them with a new restoration and some glorious goodies.

Movie Review: The Vixens of Kung-Fu / Oriental Blue (1975)

Since Vinegar Syndrome established themselves just a few months ago as one of the finer genre distributors around, they've bolstered their eclectic library with some double-feature discs that don’t make much of a dent in your pocketbook, while still delivering quality content. Their most recent release of Bob Milling’s The Vixens of Kung-Fu and Oriental Blue are no different. With the help of Golden Age and all-around stellar adult film distributor, Distripix (The Opening of Misty Beethoven, Naked Came a Stranger, Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle) Vinegar Syndrome puts forth one of their finer drive-in double features.

Both The Vixens of Kung-Fu and Oriental Blue have, as the title implies – an Asian theme. They even share many of the same actors -- Jamie Gillis, C.J Lang, Bobby Astyr and Peonies.  They are different stories completely. In The Vixens of Kung-Fu a young prostitute named Yan (Bree Anthony) is fleeing from a group of rednecks played by legends, Bobby Astyr and Jamie Gillis. She's unfortunately shot in the back by these rape-happy goons. Naturally, the boys have their way with her while she's still warm in a very sleazy foursome, which includes another actor jerking into some cloth vessel whilst Astyr and Gillis do what they do best.

Movie Review: Grindhouse Collection: Sex Before Marriage Double Feature (1969,1970)

Whenever a new collection from After Hours Cinema's "Grindhouse Collection" series comes out, more often than not vintage XXX fans get a treasure trove of ultra-sleazy goodness. With some of the biggest stars and directors of the 70's spotlighting many of the releases (John Holmes, Rene Bond, Tina Russell, Carter Stevens) so you're almost certain to find at least something to entertain. The recent release of the Sex Before Marriage double feature has none of those stars but it is appropriately filthy when it's not dull.

Sex Before Marriage opens this double-bill of early XXX smut in grand fashion with a lamb-chop sideburn wearing bachelor partaking in pre-nuptial fornication with his fiancée. One woman ain’t enough for this dude so after he finishes on her belly he goes on the hunt for some cooch not attached to his wife. In between and during the sex scenes we see is wife in front of a church waving a bouquet of flowers and looking frustrated because he hasn’t shown up to the wedding that was actually that day. This one’s watchable for some of the camp value surrounding the pre-wedding shenanigans, but I have to warn, the sex scenes are generally pretty painful.

Movie Review: New York Grindhouse Superstars: Kathy's Graduation, School Of Sexual Arts and Tycoon's Daughter

Situation: You, being the classic adult film lover, are knocking back a couple of 40's with one of your friends and start telling them about all the great films from that era of outlaw cinema. They? Are still way skeptical, with visions of hairy nutsacks, horny pizza boys and bad acting in their heads. Okay, fine. You're obviously going to need some evidence of a more physical kind (not that kind of physical, perv) to prove them wrong. After all, there are two kinds of adult films. The ones that can function as both a movie and an adult film and then straight up sleaze, in all of its sweaty and awkward dangling glory. After Hours Cinema DVD release, “New York Grindhouse Superstars” is completely and a 100% in the latter category. Even better for you smuthounds, it's a triple bill, all helmed by one of the most notable directors of that era, Shaun Costello.

Movie Review: Grindhouse Collection: John Holmes Biggest & Best

The legendary supercock is back! In yet another collection from After Hours Cinema, John Curtis Holmes is featured in his early years probing just about anything he can get his massive appendage in. This time around you get to see four films - Strangers When We Mate, Bed Companions, My Tongue is Quick and Johnny's Sex Stories all from the After Hours Films archives.

In Strangers When We Mate, a group of seven total strangers meet up in some mansion in what looks to be California. A doctor therapist type (who looks like Gabe Kaplan from Welcome Back Kotter fame) encourages the seven horny folks to engage in both one-on-one. Holmes plays a cowboy with an accent thicker than his celebrated wang. The narration by the "doctor" is pretty funny on this one as are the performances, making Strangers When We Mate one of the better films on the set.
