Joe Dante's The Howling has stood the test of time as being one of the greatest horror films of all time. It really is that good. The Howling has it all - Scares, clever humor, amazing special FX by Rick Baker as well as an excellent ensemble cast of cult film favorites. Along with An American Werewolf in London, The Howling has transcended the routine lycanthrope film with it's revolutionary transformation FX. As great as the original was, Joe Nimziki's The Howling: Reborn unfortunately lacks in all of those crucial categories. Simply put, it's chore to endure.
High school outcast Will Kidman (Landon Liboiron ) fancies the attention of an attractive classmate named Elyiana ( Lindsey Shaw ). Will's crush has him so smitten that he doodles elaborate pictures of the cutie. He soon finds out that this infatuation is bringing to life more than what's in his Dockers.
As it turns out Will is a werewolf, but his urges have laid dormant for the eighteen years he's been alive . No thanks to Mum, the shape-shifting curse was passed down to our melancholy hero when she was pregnant. The similarities to Twilight are very apparent here - you have the dopey sad kid in love, the group of werewolf teenagers at school, painful narration and next to no gore (aside from a bloodless decapitation). In the end you have very week werewolf film that does no justice to Dante's creation.
Anchor Bay really has done a fine job on the Blu-ray as the image and sound are top-notch. A few extras are included in addition to the feature in the form of an audio commentary and a featurette on production. Sadly, The Howling: Reborn is likely only going to appeal fans of Stephenie Meyers' werewolves so true horror fans may want to pass.
