Movie Review: The Afflicted (2010)

This indie-thriller takes you inside the lives of a family torn apart by a mother's slow descent into insanity. Leslie Easterbrook plays the role of Mother Maggie, a woman who, even at the beginning of the movie I thought was just not quite right in the head. It didn't take her long to prove me right when she awakens late one night to find her husband sneaking out the front door with his bags packed, apparently fed up with his wife's religious rantings and erratic behavior. After failing to convince him to stay she solves the situation by beating him to death with a baseball bat.

Movie Review: Hack Job (2011)

I know it's tough to make an independent horror film. I've been a part of that process. Horror is the one genre that people will watch at the no budget level, so it's where most people seem to start. The problem with this is that it stacks the horror section with crap, floor to ceiling. Hack Job starts off acting like it intended for this movie to be pure shit, but I don't believe it. I think it really was supposed to be good, and the filmmakers took an easy out.

Our filmmakers start off by killing an indie art film director. They complain that horror doesn't get its due. They go on for the rest of the movie proving the naysayers right. The duo gets a script from Satan that's supposed to be the greatest horror film ever. As we find out, the three stories in the anthology turn out to be fairly worthless.

Supernatural Tales, an anthology of 16 horror shorts coming to DVD!

Supernatural Tales is a new double DVD featuring 16 new horror short films from Denmark, all previously unreleased. All films were shown during the Movie Battle competition in connection with CPH PIX 2012 - www.cphpix.dk - which was held with the theme "supernatural horror".

Like its predecessor, Wasteland Tales from the previous Movie Battle in 2010 with a post apocalyptic theme, Supernatural Tales is a collection of no less than 16 short films clearly showing there is a surprising solid mass of film making talent for a small country like Denmark, urging to tell stories other than light comedies and social realistic drama.

This double DVD released by Another World Entertainment - www.anotherworldent.com - features all these films and provides a solid 280 minutes of pure entertainment. Many of the films are in English language, and the ones in Danish language are all provided with English subtitles.

Book Review: Garbage Pail Kids (2012, Topps)

When I was a kid, there was a huge toy craze that I still don't understand. Before people trampled each other for a Tickle Me Elmo, parents clamored for Cabbage Patch Kids. They were extremely popular, and I never knew why. My mom bought one for each of us, and I don't remember any of us asking for one. I certainly never would have. I was always too busy with my Star Wars toys. One thing I did love as a kid, however, was parody. It started with "Weird" Al Yankovic and Saturday Night Live, and it continued with the arrival of Topps' Garbage Pail Kids. They took the kids from the cabbage patch and dropped them in a landfill. My friends and I were all extremely delighted.

Movie Review: House on Haunted Hill (1959)

Directed by William Castle

Starring Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart and Richard Long

Director William Castle was more then just a film maker, he was a showman, the undisputed king of B-movie's during his time. He was the “gimmick guy”, and when you stepped into the theater to watch one of his movies you would always be entertained, from flying skeleton's floating through the theater for House on Haunted Hill, to electrified theater seats for The Tingler.

And although his movies were never considered great during their time, they always made money and most are now considered true cult classics of this early age of horror movies. In fact, director Alfred Hitchcock was so impressed with the success and style of House on Haunted Hill, after watching it he decided to try his hand at making his own low budget horror movie. I think it was something called Psycho.

Jeff and Kevin head straight into chaos this week after Kevin finally watched A Serbian Film. His reaction to it is surprising as he explains that the movie really isn't about shock value.

Movie Review: Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (2011)

When Roger Corman won an honorary Academy Award in 2010, as a lifelong fan of Corman's massive body of work, I was overjoyed. I also thought "about freakin' time he got some recognition". Corman has been a huge part in spearheading the careers of Hollywood's elite: Francis Ford Coppola, Robert DeNiro, Martin Scorsese, Robert Towne Jonathan Demme, James Cameron, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdonavich, Bruce Dern, Peter Fonda and of course Jack Nicholson. Not too shabby for a guy who’s been labeled a schlock-meister. Director Alex Stapelton has taken on the fascinating life of Roger Corman with his documentary Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel and the results are really quite impressive.

Movie Review: Big Money Rustlas (2010)

Many people like to discount the Insane Clown Posse as a pair of talentless idiots whose followers represent the dumbest dregs of American society. I was one of those people. After watching Big Money Rustlas, I would like to be counted as two of those people. Assuming that most ICP fans probably can't count, I don't think that will be a problem. Look, I'm not trying to be one of the "haters." I'm just being honest. These guys aren't good at anything. They aren't good rappers. They are terrible actors. They can't even manage to do a halfway decent job putting on clown makeup. If you think I'm just crapping on this movie because I hate ICP, you're wrong. I really don't care about them one way or another. They seem like nice guys, to be honest. In fact, when I was scanning Netflix for something to watch, I got excited when I saw this title, and I immediately hit play. I pretty well got what I expected.

Movie Review: Keepsake (2012)

Keepsake is another in the much-too-long-line of abduction/torture /revenge movies that seem to be all the rage today. A precious few are thought out & well done, most are not, and then there are those movies that just insult the intelligence of those who watch them. (Yes, even people like us who watch torture-porn can be insulted). This one unfortunately falls into the latter category.

Movie Review: Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 (2011)

Directed by Robert Hall

Starring Brian Austin Green, Thomas Dekker and Mimi Michaels.

“Chromeskull” is the sequel to the 2009 surprise hit “Laid to Rest”, where we were introduced to this latest and greatest masked serial killer of the silver screen. Movie Review: Bane (2009)

Directed by James Eaves

Starring Sophia Dawnay, Lisa Devlin and Jonethan Sidgwick

Bane opens with four women being forced into a chair and drugged against their will. They soon awaken in a visqueen covered cage with no memory of how they got there or even who they are. Character-wise, they've got the bases covered, there's the whimpering basketcase, the mousy maternal glasses-wearing character, the tough-girl, and the hot but stoic blonde.

Movie Review: National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus (2012)

I've always been a big fan of Will Sasso (Mad TV, Best in Show, Happy Gilmore) but the lumpy comic definitely has his detractors. Most of the naysayers aren't too happy that he's playing Curly in the new The Three Stooges movie. Curly maybe somewhat sacred in comedy lore but is still don't understand the fuss because he's versitale enough... and, well, he's fat and bald. Recently I got to see Sasso star in Image Entertainment's release of Jeff Kanew's National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus. Kanew's a capable comedic director - he did helm the 80's comedy classic Revenge of the Nerds - and Sasso's several years of being the funny fat guy on Mad TV give me some hope.

Movie Review: Camel Spiders (2012)

The thought of a movie produced by Roger Corman about killer spiders, directed by quite possibly one of the most prolific titty flick directors in Jim Wynorski (Not of this Earth - 1988, Hard To Die) had this murderous arachnid enthusiast very excited. Not since Arachnophobia, nearly 20 years or so ago, the killer spider film has been neglected. Anchor Bay has just released the superb documentary on Corman, titled Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel so maybe the creepy crawlers can duplicate the success and give us creature feature fans what we need.

The American military are immersed in an intense exchange of artillery with some Arab soldiers in the Middle-East. What both parties don't know is that they are about to be joined by a new foe that will make their little skirmish look like teenagers fighting with Supersoakers. There to crash the party are gigantic poisonous camel spiders.

Movie Review: The Shrine (2010)

Supernatural movies can be hit or miss. We can all suspend disbelief enough to get into the idea that spirits surround us, and for many people, that isn't a huge stretch. It's interesting to think that good and evil apparitions may be here at all times. The tough part is making it scary. The Shrine tries to do that, I think, but it just sort of, I don't know. It's just sort of there.

Here's the story. An overzealous reporter decides to investigate a missing American in Poland without her bosses knowledge, and we learn why that's a very bad idea. Not only that, but she takes an intern and her photographer boyfriend with on the excursion. The intern is aware that they are working against the editor's wishes, but the boyfriend doesn't know until they get there. For the rest of the film, he provides the only voice of reason.

Movie Review: The Cuckoo Clocks Of Hell (2011)

I really thought it was quite fitting that The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell director Ron Atkins opened his film with this brilliant quotation from the great W.C Fields: "I am free of all prejudice, I hate everyone equally". These words set up perfectly what you experience for the entire running time of Atkins' film. Independent horror icon Jim Van Bebber (The Manson Family, Deadbeat at Dawn) and John Giancaspro (Schizophreniac: The Whore Mangler) star in this amazingly fucked-up fairytale that brings Giancaspro's vile Harry Russo head to head with the titular character in Roger Watkins' shocker Last House on Dead End Street, Terry Hawkins (played by Van Bebber). One of these guys is bad enough..but both??

Movie Review: The Wrong House (2010)

There are few things I like better then being pleasantly surprised while watching a movie. Before watching The Wrong House I did my customary IMDB check-in, user-rating...not good, reviews...not very nice, budget...ultra-low. Not expecting much, I popped in the DVD and ended up watching a pretty slick little indie horror movie.
