Movie Review: Klown (2010)

Directed by Mikkel Norgaard

Starring Frank Hvam, Casper Christensen and Marcuz Jess Peterson

Run Time: 89 minutes

Danish Language- English Subtitles

Frank is, what on the surface appears to be one of the worlds greatest fuck-ups. In order to prove his fatherhood potential to his pregnant girlfriend who has just dumped him, and in an act of desperation, he “kidnaps” her 12 year old nephew Bo, and takes him along on his best friend Casper’s weekend canoe trip of debauchery, which they have dubbed their “Tour de Pussy”. The wife and girlfriend of the two are under the impression this is merely a boys weekend in the country and have no idea the canoe trip has a scheduled stop at a music festival and a brothel.

Within the first five minutes though, this “Tour de Pussy” turns into a series of misadventures, disasters and fiasco’s that are almost too outrageous to be believed. At one point, Frank believes he has made a breakthrough and gotten in touch with his fatherly abilities but soon after, smokes some weed and loses the boy like a set of car keys at the crowded festival, forcing him to take desperate measures to make things right, which, like most things Frank does, leads to even more disastrous results.

Okay, this was my first foray into Danish film (excluding porn, of coarse), and man was it awesome! Mainly because this movie went places with its comedy that Hollywood would just never have to balls to go to. Klown is a testosterone-charged,  guys-version of the “chick-flick”. A canoe trip into the bowels of Sodom and Gomorrah with an innocent 12 year old along for the ride. A movie that pokes fun at subjects like statutory rape, gay anal rape, sex with ugly women, accidentally jacking off on the wrong relative and the joys of fatherhood. As well as the inappropriate touching of minors, and a strange fascination with the penis of a young boy.

I’ve seen some pretty good comedies in the course of doing reviews for The Cheese, but nothing could prepare me for what I watched here. From a comedy standpoint, this flick is just pure Cinema Gold. The acting and comedic timing of all the main characters was just flawless and by the end of the film I felt a great kinship with each of them. There really isnt anything I can compare this film to, and in all honesty its a little tough writing a review for a movie where I dont want to cheat potential viewers by revealing a single gag or outrageous situation. But I will tell you this, I laughed my ass off, and some of the gags were so awkward and over-the-top that I simply sat there staring at the screen with my mouth hanging open. Did they really just do that? Fuckin-A... yes they did.

Political correctness and common decency just had no place in this film, and for that I tip my hat to this movie. Maybe not something you want to pop in the dvd player with mixed company in the room but if you are a fan of wildly filthy and inappropriate comedy, then this one is worth its weight in gold.
An Absolute Must See.

  1. I was wondering about this movie since I do like foreign films but I had no idea what it was about. My buddies have been talking about it for a while now so I thought I’d look it up. Your review definitely makes it sounds like a crazy movie filled with plenty of opportunities to laugh so I went ahead and added it to my Blockbuster @ Home queue and the movie should be here in a few days via mail. I find it interesting that you said that it’s a guy’s version of a chick flick because I’m not sure what that means. I’ve been using Blockbuster for a while now since I work at DISH so I get to watch a few new movies each week. I love films where everything just leads up to repeated over-the-top comedic moments and this one sounds like it’s right up my alley.
