Movie Review: The Burning Moon (Intervision, 1997)

Severin Films' eclectic label Intervision has brought some very interesting titles to DVD recently in the form the 80's SOV oddities Things and Sledgehammer. Say what you will about either film, they do have an audience. Olaf Ittenbach's splatter film The Burning Moon is another one of those "films" that seems to be a perfect selection for the label. After sitting on the shelf with only a VHS release via the long defunct Dead Alive Productions the gore classic is making its debut in the US courtesy of Intervision, and well... it's gonna get messy.

Movie Review: Premutos (1999)

Directed by Olaf Ittenbach

Starring Fidelis Atuma, Heiko Bender and Anke Fabre

Watching Olaf Ittenbach's Premutos was like taking a trip back to my childhood in many ways. Aside from the retro look and feel of it, I would compare it to walking down the aisles of a Toys R Us store as a 7 year old kid and getting sensory-overload from the sheer awesomeness of what I was immersed in. Only instead of shiny toys I was completely bombarded by shocking visual images and blood-soaked old school special effects. Premutos is a movie that reminds me exactly why I've had a love affair with horror movies for most of my life.

Movie Review: Black Past (1989)

In the year the Berlin Wall came tumbling down, a disaffected German youth named Thommi (director-writer-star Olaf Ittenbach) discovers a heavily sealed box in his family home’s attic. Said box contains a cursed mirror, which led the original home’s owner to go on a killing spree and wipe out his whole family. The mirror takes possession of Thommi’s girlfriend and commands her to go out and play in traffic, and when she’s struck by a passing car and killed, He becomes inconsolable. He is tormented of nightmares where his girlfriend, her arms and legs sticking out of holes in astroturf – wait! She’s supposed to be dismembered! Ooooops! Thommi falls under the spell of the mirror, and likewise kills his family and lasts of strawberry punch is thrown around.

Movie Review: The Burning Moon (1992)

German extreme gore seemed to be dominated by three splatter-loving directors when it was at its pinnacle during the late 80's and early 90's. You had the corpse-banging genius of Jorg Buttgereit (Nekromantik, Nekromantik II, Schramm), the Ed Wood-ian, lowest common denominator trash of Andreas Schnaas (The Violent Shit Trilogy, Anthropophagous 2000, Zombie 90) and my personal favorite of these three auteurs, Olaf Ittenbach (Black Past, Dard Divorce, Premutos). Another World Entertainment is giving Ittenabach's films brand-new releases that include today’s review of The Burning Moon.
