Movie Review: DeadGirl: Director's Cut (Blu-ray, 2008)

One of the absolute best things about being a film fan, for me, has to be seeing a talent grow. Whether it be writing, directing, acting, it really doesn’t matter - growth is growth. Troma alum, Trent Haaga, writer of the film DeadGirl is one of those talents that has taken that extra step. With DeadGirl, he goes beyond the numerous micro-budget fare he’s been a part of for ten plus years and brings forth an intelligent, disturbing story of two teens, a dead female (or is she?) and a lot of pent up testosterone.

The director team of Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel take hold of Haaga's vision, giving us the viewer one sick, thought-provoking little indie. I wondered after viewing DeadGirl: What if in the heartfelt coming-of-age classic Stand By Me the boys who were on a journey to find a dead body in the woods, found that dead body in the first ten minutes? Beyond poking the corpse with a stick, what might have those curious kids done in the remaining 90 minutes? Yes, it's morbid and almost sacrilege because it's fucking Stand By Me, an American classic - but who knows.

Movie Review: Norwegian Ninja (2010)

The “Ninja” film was a pretty popular subgenre during the mid 1980’s. Something about the mysterious shuriken-chucking, sword-slashing men in black captivated action film audiences. Sho Koshugi (Pray For Death, Revenge of the Ninja) along with Michael Dudikoff (American Ninja) were probably the biggest names to put on the garb of the ancient Japanese assassins. Now, you can add the name Mads Ousdal to the mix of actors to play a ninja. He isn’t like any of the other ninjas that you’ve seen – he’s a Norwegian Ninja!

Ousdal plays real-life Cold War traitor, “Arne Treholt” in writer/director Thomas Cappalen Malling’s oddball spy/ninja/Cold War feature, Norwegian Ninja. Let me tell you folks, Norwegiean Ninja is unlike any ninja film I’ve ever seen. This is a good thing though, as it’s actually a very clever and humorous little film. Malling’s movie is a fictional account of Treholt where he’s a "master ninja" who trains and leads a group of ninjas known as the “Ninja Elite Forces” .

Movie Review: Stake Land (2010, Blu-ray)

Of all the sub-genres of horror, my least favorite has to be the "vampire" genre. Vampires just don't scare me. The sparkly bloodsuckers of the Twilight series haven’t helped things either. Near Dark is probably the last vampire film that I could actually call a horror film, but sadly, Near Dark is 24 years old. 24 years later, I'm balder, fatter and hungrier for a vampire film that isn't like the neutered shite I've been fed for so long. Might I have found the answer in Jim Mickle’s Stake Land?

Movie Review: Wake Wood (2011, Blu-ray)

Hammer Films has been a glorious banner for some of the finest examples of horror films to come out of the UK for the past fifty plus years. Production has been dormant until recently with Hammer's newest offering, David Keating’s thriller, Wake Wood. Dark Sky Films and MPI are now producing Wake Wood for the home entertainment market in both Blu-ray and DVD incarnations of the recent shocker.

Anyone who is a parent knows that one of the absolute worst things that could happen to a family is the loss of a young child. Patrick and Louise ( Aidan Gillen and Eva Birthistle) experience this very thing when their daughter, Alice (Ella Connolly) is fatally mauled - in surprisingly graphic fashion - by a vicious mongrel patrolling the grounds of the veterinary hospital where Patrick works.

Movie Review: Hatchet II (2010, Dark Sky/ MPI)

Adam Green has been a busy man the past couple years. After unleashing his superb 80's throwback slasher comedy, Hatchet, Green quickly plunged into production for Frozen and the inevitable Hatchet II. Hatchet II has received mediocre reviews at best compared to the critically acclaimed original. There's also been much talk on the internet about the "Support Unrated" campaign, mostly negative as well; some claiming it to be more of a publicity stunt. Hatchet II was apparently given the cold shoulder by theaters because of its graphic violence. Whether it's true is certainly up for debate. As someone who shat his pants at the site of warning labels on B horror films at his local mom and pop, this to me, was inviting.
