Movie Review: Into The Lion's Den (2011)

Screeners from Breaking Glass Pictures generally have a genre printed across them. The screener for Into The Lion's Den said "gay suspense." I wasn't sure what that would mean, but I had expectations. Indie films that focus on gay characters tend to be about the characters dealing with their sexuality or dating and there will be a penis every twenty-seven minutes. It's just the way it is. Like most indie dramas, they are brimming with pretentiousness and usually try to force some ham-fisted point down your throat. This movie starts that way, but takes a turn you don't expect.

Movie Review: iCrime (2011)

So here's an indie film that uses the MTV formula to tell the story of a Midwestern girl finding her way to the big city of L.A. Carrie (Sara Fletcher) the Okie noob gets a job working for a website called Echo Report and is trying to protect her cousin Stefy from a sex tape going public. But that plot line is just one of many going on in this movie, and depending on your own personal level of A.D.D. That's either going to enhance or detract from your viewing experience here. (Personally for me there was just way too many different things going on in this one). Anyway, in order to help save her cousin, Sara is trying to expose the internet sensation Jordan as a fraud, by proving she is in fact an actress and not the innocent school girl she plays online. In doing this she must deeply immerse herself in the lies, deception and betrayal of the L.A. Scene. She may make a name for herself in doing this, or she may become the next Hollywood murder victim.

Movie Review: Worst in Show (2011, Breaking Glass Pictures)

The Westminster Kennel Club is well known for having annual televised dog shows that celebrate the very best of every dog breed. To me, it's all a little weird. As a goof, some people in California decided to put together a show for the world's ugliest dogs. What started as something for fun became a sensation thanks to a dog named Sam and the power of the web. Now the competition is serious business for some.

This is an interesting documentary that follows a few of the competitors. The competition we see takes place one year after a dog named Pabst takes the title. Pabst's owner, Miles, joined the competition for fun. He really had no expectation of winning, but after defeating Rascal, Miles came back to defend Pabst's title. Miles is really in it for fun, and has no plans of making this a regular thing.

Movie Review: George: A Zombie Intervention (2011)

Plot~ The film starts out with an elementary school educational film about how a red star comes to earth and releases spores into the atmosphere, which are inhaled and lay dormant in the lungs until those infected die, at which time the dead become zombies. But not all zombies are bad, kids! Most can lead normal productive lives, go to work and support their families. But there are those others, who,shall we say......have self-control issues. And George is one of those, he just cant keep from indulging in the socially inappropriate behavior of hacking, slashing or chopping people up and dining on their juiciest parts. His friends and family are at their wits-end and decide to stage an intervention with the help of a rookie interventionist. The first part of the intervention is unsuccessful as George is resistant and resentful (as most addicts are at the beginning) so they decide to take a little break so that everyone can regroup. And that is when all hell breaks loose as Georges growling stomach starts to get the best of him and the body parts start to pile up. The intervention then becomes a game of survival for his best friend and ex-girlfriend.

Movie Review: Exit 33 (2011)

I love, and I mean LOVE Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees. There is no better man behind that mask. I was thoroughly disappointed to see Ken Kirzinger in Jason vs. Freddy. I like Hodder's style and attitude. When the screener came across for Exit 33, I was happy to be the person to review it. I haven't seen Hodder out of the hockey mask. I was curious to see what that would be like. I haven't heard great things about BTK, but I thought Exit 33 sounded more like what we expect from Hodder. After all, you have pretty young people and a creepy guy in the middle of nowhere. Simple horror formula equals basic horror fun.

Movie Review: Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives

Wow. That's all I have. Wow. That was an... experience. Apparently, the heir apparent to John Waters' gilded, trashy throne is Israel Luna, the writer and director of Ticked Off Trannies with Knives. I'm a huge Waters fan, from Pink Flamingos to Pecker and beyond, and I haven't had this much fun with a faux seventies grindhouse rip since Black Dynamite. Luna gets it and, more importantly, those crazy trannies get it, too!

I'm never really sure in most cases when a filmmaker is truly channeling the seventies exploitation flick or some kind of production mishap caused the 'style' change, but Trannies delivers. It is apparent, right from the start, that we are in an exploitation revenge fantasy complete with sexy babes (relatively speaking), dastardly villains and excessive violence (complete with missing reels and grainy film, of course). Breaking Glass Pictures is releasing Ticked Off Trannies with Knives on DVD November 9th, and I can't wait for the rest of the world to experience this. The filmmakers have attempted to create a new genre... transploitation (not mine, I stole that from somewhere).

Movie Review: Desert Son (2010)

I like a movie with a little suspense. Desert Son has exactly that. A little suspense. Very little. We start out with super pouty Phillip (John Bain), who sits in the back seat of his drunken and angry stepfather's car. Apparently, stepdad see's Phil as little more than a whiny bitch, and he's pretty much right. After he's had enough, stepdaddy ditches Phillip in the desert. At that point, good parenting aside, I was right with him, and I wanted to see what bar he was hitting next. Unfortunately, we have to watch Phillip for the next hour and a half.
