Movie Review: Dead Hooker in a Trunk (2009)

Directed by Jen & Sylvia Soska

Starring Jen & Sylvia Soska, Rikki Gagne

Two friends, Badass and Junkie, are on their way to score dope from a shady drug dealer. Along for the ride is Badass's sister, Geek and her friend Goody Two Shoes. Just as their adventure is getting into gear they discover a dead hooker in the trunk of their car. Bloody, madcap adventures ensue, as the four outwit horny police officers, a sleezy hotel manager who unwittingly fucks the dead hooker, chainsaw wielding Triads and a brutal serial killer with a baseball bat, all the while being followed by a Lemmy Kilminster look-alike cowboy pimp determined to claim the dead hooker for himself.

When it comes to enjoying a “grindhouse-style” movie, the object of the game is to embrace the absurdity of the situations and hold back on judgements concerning such trivialities as realism and common sense. The fact of the matter is, Dead Hooker makes no fucking sense at all. But an even bigger glaring fact is that Dead Hooker is a complete blast to watch.

We've got tons of violence, buckets of blood and guts, a goat, and two of the sexiest, most seductive vixens to ever grace a box-cover. Scenes of note include the graphic andrealistic disemboweling of a drug dealer, the hilarious dismemberment of Junkies arm by a passing truck (scene highlighted by Badass chasing down the truck, punching the driver in the face and then pulling the severed arm from the grill of the truck. With the arm later being sewn back on by Goody Two Shoes, and amazingly enough, Junkie is able to play the guitar with it soon after!) A great cameo by Carlos “El Mariachi” Gallardo, playing the role of God, and what I thought was the most under-sold scene of the movie, where our four friends are about to bury the hooker in a shallow grave and the hooker suddenly jumps up (apparently she wasn't dead afterall) only to have Badass smash her across the skull with a shovel and kill her. Like I said, it's not always about making sense.

This was a great debut by the two first-time film makers, the Soska sisters. Though the script could have been better and the overall flow of the movie would have gone much smoother had they cut the length of it down by 10 minutes or so, it was still a solid effort as far as no-budget movies go. These girls show they have talent and potential, and hopefully we will have the opportunity to watch them grow as film makers. And for me personally, I really want to see Sylvia Soska in another movie, she is one sexy woman (not to take anything away from Jen, she's smokin' hot as well) and they both did an adequate job of acting their parts.

Give me more Soska sisters! After watching Dead Hooker in a Trunk, I dont think I could ever tire of watching these two do their thing. This one rises above the pile of low budget indie stuff and shines quite well for what it is.
