Movie Review: Midnight Son (2012)

The vampire genre has become tired and boring to me. I just can't get excited about it anymore. I refuse to watch Twilight. I don't like True Blood. Even the original Dracula isn't interesting to me anymore. Within the first ten minutes of Midnight Son, I was happy. This was not the same old vampire story. A young man named Jacob seems to be dealing with medical issues. He has liver issues, can't stop eating and eventually faints at work. We steadily build through his journey in dealing with a change that he can't stop.

Jacob meets a young addict named Mary. The two connect, and the troubled relationship begins. Mary is fascinated with Jacob's paintings, and Jacob really just wants to connect to someone. He's a night security guard, and his only interactions seem to be with the janitor. He seems lonely and a little lost. Mary is a good distraction from his building problems.

As Jacob's own addictions take over, he deals with a hospital employee named Marcus, who really ends up being the most exciting character in the movie. I would love to see Marcus in his own storyline. The story is great, and Zak Kilberg does an excellent job as Jacob. His character is developed very well, and you pull for the guy throughout. Familiar face Larry Cedar also fills his role well as a cop looking for answers in a local murder case.

I highly recommend Midnight Son. I can't say anything bad about it. The acting is solid all around, which is not always the case with indie horror. When you make a vampire movie that I enjoy, that's a great thing. It's tough to make an old story feel new, and Midnight Son handles that challenge quite well.
