FanCam: The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special (2002)

The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special is lifted right from the one-shot comic of the same name. With a budget of around 3K, director Scott Lebrecht was the first to bring the Main Man to the big screen! The eight-minute short film was for Lebrecht's USC film school project and there is a LOT of love dumped into it. Love dumping like Santa in a North Pole prostitute. Yep, this one isn't for the kiddies. The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special is a favorite comic of mine and is one of the funny books largely responsible for what I do today. It is irreverent, violent and quite funny. And surprisingly, so is Lebrecht's short film!

FanCam: Batman - Dead End (2003)

The first edition of this was so much fun, I decided to follow up with one of my favorite Batman fan films... Batman: Dead End! Written and produced by Sandy Collara in 2003 as a showpiece, a kind of business card as a director, this eight-minute film is FILLED with bat-goodness. Many people even assert that this is the best Batman film ever made regardless if DC gave their permission or not! Not only do we get Batman, but the Joker makes an appearance as does the Predator and some Alien Xenomporphs! We can only assume that the production was inspired by the Batman vs. Predator crossover that DC had with Dark Horse in the 1990s.

Movie Review: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - Warner Brothers - (2016)

Zach Snyder directs his second film for the DC movie universe, bringing his particular style of directing with him.  Whether you like that type of thing is entirely up to you.

Batman V Superman gave us the fight we were anticipating and also introduced the audience to some new characters.  The pacing of this movie was pretty slow going early on with an artsy dream sequence explaining Batman's(Ben Affleck) origin.  Much of Batman's view of the world and Superman(Henry Cavill) being in it is fueled heavily on his delusional dreams(of which he has plenty).  I had a hard time figuring out if Bruce's butler/assistant in the Bat-Cave, Alfred(Jeremy Irons) is the voice of reason or someone feeding into Bruce Wayne's fears.  Bruce Wayne is Batman for you non-superhero loving folks.

The world is starting to fear Superman and he's being framed for violence across the world.  The framing of the Man of Steel seemed a bit of a stretch but you got to do something to get this movie going.  With all this fear, Lex Luthor(Jesse Eisenberg) is on the hunt for Kryptonite after discovering how it affects the other Krytponian, the now deceased Zod.

Dave discusses his love for a mystery solving Angela Lansbury. He and Kevin also talk about the rest of the elderly television sleuths, kids shows that starred adults and the many celebrities we lost over the last week. They also give their thoughts on who portrayed which DC superheroes the best.

Jeff chimes in with a few reviews, including Amerikan Holokaust and Lost Faith from CHC favorite Joel Wynkoop.

Movie Review: The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special (2002)

Day 6 of the David Hayes 12 Days of Christmas Crap Review-a-Palooza is in the books and I just had to take a break. I couldn’t wade through anymore holiday dreck and so I thought I’d expose y’all to a little comic book-inspired awesomeness.

On the sixth day of Christmas, the Head Cheese gave to me… six fraggin’ bastiches!

For those of you who are unaware, I am a HUGE comic book fan. Personally, I think it is the perfect medium. You don’t have to deal with diva actors and giant budgets. If I want to blow up Jupiter, I can blow up Jupiter. If I want a zombie attack in the middle of the Battle of Gettysburg… I get what I want without any issues. That is why the comic book is so freaking cool. With that said, the comics I tend to read are a little, well, they are equally as off as I am. In the 1990s and early 2000s, though, no other character took root in my heart like Lobo. The last surviving member of his race (because he killed the rest), professional ass-whooper for hire and all around hip psychopath. Originally a part of the Omega Men series, Lobo found a home in L.E.G.I.O.N. before he proved far too popular, and got a revamp by writer/artists extraordinaire Alan Grant and Keith Giffen. Lobo’s solo comic book debut was in a single issue one-shot called The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special.

Movie Review: Green Lantern: First Flight (2009)

Green Lantern: First Flight is the DC Universe's newest animated feature. It puts Green Lantern, a character whose time to shine has definitely come, front and center in an epic adventure across the universe. Accompanied by various members of the Green Lantern Corp, the newest lantern, Hal Jordan, has to stop a rogue Hero-turned-Villain before he destroys the Corps and enslaves the universe. It's big, loud, explosive, and action packed; everything one would expect from a superhero movie in general, and a Green Lantern movie in particular, which is why it's that much worse that the final product is mildly disappointing.

To be fair, the film does more things right than wrong. GL's origin story is greatly abbreviated into a five minute segment before the credits even roll. Superhero origins are generally the same: Alien falls to Earth/Fish out of water - Superman, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Wonder Woman; Parents killed by criminals/Are criminals - Batman, Robin, Jericho, Raven; Bestowed power by alien/accident - Spider-man, Green Lantern, Flash; Parents are heroes - Black Canary, Huntress. The only people who don't understand that hero origins can be summed up in a few words aren't going to be buying this movie, and the director, Lauren Montgomery, understood this. Unfortunately we don't get much character development about Hal Jordan before he is given the ring, but we know what we need to: i.e. He's a test pilot, an alien Green Lantern named Abin Sur crashes on Earth, his ring finds Hal and brings him to the injured Green Lantern, Abin Sur dies, and Hal is given the mantle. Perfect, concise, and easily flows into the title sequence.
