Movie Review: Blood Oath (2010, Troma)

The folks over at Troma have been tackling a lot more indie horror titles as of late - The most recent releases being Blood Junkie, Grim and our review for today, director David Buchert's, Blood Oath. I enjoyed some parts of both Blood Junkie and Grim but in the end they felt like mediocre missed opportunities. Does Blood Oath turn the corner? Unfortunately, no it doesn’t and it's easily the worst of the three.

Blood Oath is pretty ridiculous from the get go. The killer in the film looks like Captain Caveman with Edward James Olmos' complexion. He wields a giant blade which he slashes, and disembowels campers with who are in search of this mysterious cabin in the woods. Yet another cliché campfire story is told about the urban legend that involves this "house of death" and how they actually find the place, I have no idea. The movie is so dark it's as if a camera crew wasn't even brought on board for the project. I mean fuck, someone flick their lighter on , or something. A minor redeeming value that Blood Oath hold is that it's fairly gory - though most though most of the FX are badly executed. One notable decapitation will have many viewers falling out of their chairs at how bad it is.

Movie Review: Idol of Evil (2009)

Here is the law of diminished returns, shot-on-video style. This British import is ambitious, and yet… not. An Indiana Jones/DaVinci Code hybrid ripoff that looks and sounds all right, but still manages to lay there and smell like the turd that it is.

An anthropologist named Kixley disappears and his friend, David Hilton, is sent in by the Vatican to search for him. We soon learn that Kixley discovered the eye to an ancient skull idol with mysterious and ancient powers. He has been kidnapped by armed cultists with mis-matched uniforms who want to use if for their own nefarious purposes. Dr. Kixley’s assistant, hottie Lucy, joins Hilton on his quest to recover the artifact. The cultists are led by an under-acting over-achiever in a Tom Baker Dr. Who fedora who now holds the power to rule the world! Before it is all over, guess what? Hilton and Lucy fall in love, and she gets kidnapped, upping the stakes! After over an hour of dull cat-and-mouse and some really lack-luster fight scenes, we finally are “treated” to some supernatural gore effects reminiscent of a high school re-enactment of the resurrection scene in the original Hellraiser. The resulting creature is a normal-sized spawn of the War of the Colossal Beast monster without the entertainment factor, and is dispatched almost immediately.

Is there any better location in which to set a monster movie than a naturist colony? A Nazi death camp would provide opportunity for fetishistic sleaze in black leather, but using a nudist camp preserves all the innocence of the old school monsters while gifting us with copious quantities of naked female flesh. The Monster of Camp Sunshine is a terrible movie, make no mistake about that, but it's also a truly surreal, bizarre and unique picture that deserves all those adjectives and more. Unlike most of the Z grade movies I've reviewed for Cinematic Hell, this is one I'd truly recommend you see, just for the experience. Apparently sincere in its message about naturism, its tongue is nonetheless firmly in its cheek when it comes to the monster and it goes full out holy batshit insane when it feels like it. The last fifteen minutes is sheer outsider genius and it takes something truly special nowadays to make this reviewer exclaim, 'What just happened?'

The Ernest films are guilty pleasures for me. I wore out my VHS of Ernest Goes to Camp due to watching it over and over again as a kid. It's always fun to re-watch flicks you loved so much all those years ago. Nostalgia plays a big part, for better or worse. In this case for better. I remembered why I kept rewinding the tape and hitting play repeatedly. Ernest flicks work so well because of the late great Jim Varney. The titular character actor made me laugh then and surprisingly still now. So sit back and dig in on my review, "Know what I mean?"

Movie Review: Ultimate Death Match II (2010, MVD Visual)

Anyone who knows me well enough knows that I love professional wrestling. I've been following the likes of The Missing Link, Abdullah the Butcher, Bruiser Brody, Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper and so many other superstars since I was six years old. Wrestling captivated me as a youth. It doesn't so much now but I still have a great time watching it. A few months back when I was doing an entry for our Cinema Head Cheese "Movie Burrito" column I did a review for Shawn Cain's Ultimate Death Match. I wasn't terribly kind. It just wasn't what I had expected. Cain's done a sequel, but this time he's attempted amp it with quite a bit more talent from the wrestling world - even with some of my personal favorites (Raven, Kevin Nash and the returning Al Snow). Is it an improvement? Most definitely.

Book Review: Swedish Sensationsfilms: A Clandestine History Of Sex, Thrillers and Kicker Cinema (Daniel Ekeroth, 2011)

Personally, I'd like to thank the country of Sweden from the bottom of my perverted heart for giving the world that amazingly beautiful creature sexploitation film fans know as Christina Lindberg (Thriller: A Cruel Picture, Exponerad, Maid in Sweden). Oh and yeah, Ingmar Bergman, isn't too shabby a contribution either. I'm a big fan of Swedish cult cinema but unfortunately it’s come very late in my life. Discovering new films from one of Europe's finest countries has been a challenge.That is until I set my eyes on Daniel Ekeroth's newest book, Swedish Sensationfilms: A Clandestine History Of Sex, Thrillers and Kicker Cinema. American Psycho 2

I get the feeling that the people who wrote this never actually saw the original. The movie starts with Mila Kunis narrating about how she's studying the greatest serial killer of modern times, Patrick Bateman. Did anyone else get that all of his murdering never really happened? Didn't they figure out that it was all a crazy narcissistic dream? Maybe not. Mila Kunis is nice to look at for an hour and a half, and William Shatner is funny as her professor, so even though it's trash, it's watchable trash.

Movie Review: The Stranger (1946)

Here is another amazing re-master from HD Cinema Classics. This collection is pretty oddball, featuring everything from Al Adamson’s most questionable head-scratcher (CARNIVAL MAGIC) to this, Orson Welles most accessible and readily-available classic, THE STRANGER (1946). Although it has long been probably the easiest to find of Welles’s films, I have never seen such a crisp and beautiful copy. For this Orson Welles freak, it was positively a reason to cheer.

Many Welles-ophiles consider THE STRANGER to be Welles’s sell-out movie, made to prove to Hollywood producers that he could deliver a standard Hollywood product on time and on budget. Although there were the usual battles over the final edit of the movie between Welles and studio bosses, The film did become a box office success and for a time did help Welles’s standing with Hollywood studios. The screenplay is credited to Anthony Veiller, but it is commonly reported that Welles and John Huston completely rewrote it. But slick Hollywood fare though it may be, it is not typical of the normal studio post-war dramas, and all of Welles’s trademark bravado is on display. It is a terrific movie, and stands very well on its own.

Movie Review: Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Getting older sucks. It's not fun at all. You have marriages, divorces, kids, jobs that you hate, traffic and money problems. Somewhere in your thirties, you tend to look back at all of the bad decisions and missed opportunities in your life. Sometimes you just want to recapture the good times. When three friends who have grown apart try to do this, they realize that you just can't. At least, not without a hot tub and an illegal Russian energy drink.

Nick (Craig Robinson) and Adam (John Cusack) rush to the hospital to find their asshole friend Lou (Rob Corddry), who accidentally almost killed himself. They try to perk him up by taking him to a ski resort they used to visit in high school. They bring Adam's basement dwelling nephew Jacob (Clark Duke), who just fights with Lou constantly. The resort is a dump, and nowhere near the place they had all of their great times. In spite of their disappointment, they decide to get loaded and hang out in the hot tub. An accidental spill of a Russian energy drink shorts the mechanism, and the group is transported to a pivotal day in 1986.

Movie Review: The Walking Dead Girls (2010, Cheezy Flicks)

The folks over at Cheezy Flicks are starting to crank out some original productions in addition to their retro-cult film releases. One of their newest DVD's comes in the form of sexy zombie photo shoots and surprisingly enjoyable convention interviews with some of the best the zombie genre has to offer. The Walking Dead Girls is a 70 minute documentary showcasing the likes of zombie flick veterans, Linnea Quigly (Return Of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons), Bruce Campbell ( The Evil Dead Trilogy) and the father of the zombie film, George Romero( Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Martin).

We start off with a solid interview with the man himself, George Romero, followed by a zombie girl photo shoot. As I said before, the ladies look really attractive and most appear to be "enhanced" very nicely. Add the gruesome makeup to the lovely canvas and you have a horror geek’s masturbatory dream come true.

TV on DVD: Sons of Anarchy Seasons 1 & 2 (2008, 2009)

I don't know what it is, but basic cable seems to be the only place to find good television anymore. There are a few exceptions, but overall, this is the place to be. One of those places is FX. I haven't watched all of their shows, but you can't really find a bad title in their roster. Sons of Anarchy is a part of that brilliant lineup.

In the small town of Charming, CA, the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy run an auto repair shop. They also run guns, the police department and the entire town. Ron Perlman stars as Clay, the President of the Sons, also known as Samcro. Charlie Hunnam is Jax, Clay's stepson and VP of the club. The two butt heads constantly over the vision of the club. Clay wants to stick to assembling and selling firearms, but Jax's life is changing. His junkie ex-wife just had his baby. He found a book that his father wrote before he died. Apparently his dad's vision differed from Clay's. Jax's high school sweetheart has also come back into his life with her own baggage.
