Movie Review: The Puppet Masters/ Deep Rising (Blu-ray)

If you're in for a bargain Blu-ray with two of the more underrated sci-fi/ action/ horror flicks of the 1990's look no further than this double bill that includes Deep Rising and The Puppet Masters from Mill Creek.

A pack of criminals led by John Finnegan (Treat Williams, Dead Heat) invade a luxury liner hoping to find a fortune but little do they know there's a sea monster waiting to gobble them up. The action is very fast here, the gore is in abundance but the plot though like most of director Stephen Sommer's films is wafer thin. Deep Rising is a very enjoyable film if you can look past the absence of any good explanation on how the monster got on the ship. Watch for character actor, Kevin J. O'Conner, playing his usual nervous self as one of the gentler crooks in the group.

Movie Review: Hostel / Hostel II (Blu-ray)

Eli Roth's Hostel films has its fans and its even its very loud detractors that often label the talented (yes, I said talented) director a hack that's just interested in laying on the splatter and flushing any narrative down the toilet. I think their fun though as modern day exploitation.

Hostel I and II has just been released in a bargain double-bill Blu-ray pack by Mill Creek just in time for Halloween. Hostel begins with a group of young men traveling Europe looking to sew their oats. After some time in Holland rolling through the red light district the boys decide they want to hit Slovakia to try some of the girls out there. This does come at the risk of possibly being kidnapped and tortured by rich men looking for a thrill in killing Americans. Gore and humor are in abundance here with plenty of head-scratching moments to entertain.

Movie Review: The Andy Sidaris Collection: Girls, Guns and G-Strings (2011, DVD, Mill Creek)

Mill Creek reminds us that Andy Sidaris was indeed the greatest director ever with a release of his boob/action packed tenure. Hold on to your keyboards, tits, gun and explosions up ahead!

A man who took the greatest things in life, put them into a blender and hit frappe. The result is a series of films dedicated to all things badass and entertaining. Filled with gratuitous boobage supplied by then Playboy Playmates, these women also kicked major ass, sometimes putting other 80's action commandos to shame. Add a tropical island setting, car chases, excessive gun play, anything associated with raising your testosterone level and you have the gist of the 12 films included in this release.

The Ernest films are guilty pleasures for me. I wore out my VHS of Ernest Goes to Camp due to watching it over and over again as a kid. It's always fun to re-watch flicks you loved so much all those years ago. Nostalgia plays a big part, for better or worse. In this case for better. I remembered why I kept rewinding the tape and hitting play repeatedly. Ernest flicks work so well because of the late great Jim Varney. The titular character actor made me laugh then and surprisingly still now. So sit back and dig in on my review, "Know what I mean?"
