Movie Review: Halloween Hell (2015)

Ed Hardy is back after a long hiatus to give us another glimpse of gory horror in Halloween Hell. The director, most notable for the late 70s and early 80s efforts Bloody Birthday, Plague and Alien Warrior. As a fan of the time period, and Ed's films in general, I was eagerly anticipating this new venture. I remembered the gory practical effects and solid characterization on a budget that was a hallmark of an Ed Hunt film. Halloween Hell has a portion of that, which is great, but it suffers from a reliance on digital effects that are, truly, sub par and a talent pool that was drained before shooting began. Still, there are moments of really effective horror filmmaking but they are hampered by budgetary and talent constraints.

Synopsis

Six people are invited by the spirits of a haunted house to participate in a gamble for their lives in exchange of one million dollars! These young and horny fools don’t have a clue what gore is in store, as they embark on this scary venture around the house. They separate in pairs to find an exit, but as fear lingers, it hauntingly arouses them. Each lecherous couple screw away their fears and reach their most intense orgasm before the heinous acts of the night begin!

Well since Halloween is upon us at week's end, I thought what better way to celebrate the season than with some Halloween themed porn!? And while the good folks at Digital Playground may have released this film at this time last year, as it turns out, their film PREY FOR THE DYING is suitable for any Halloween season.

As the story goes, the old house, which is now owned by a rather mysterious woman, who calls herself Ms. Lou Cifer(get it?), has a rather haunting past. The legend states that the house was once owned by a beautiful woman and her husband. One day the couple returned home to find that two men had broken into the house while they were away. The night ended badly for the couple, as the two intruders first killed the husband, and then proceeded to take turns raping her. Her cries for help were indeed heard, yet no one bothered to help. The reason? Everyone believed that the woman of the house was a witch. And because of this, the men, along with the townspeople, proceeded to burn her alive. In the years since the incident, the legend continues to state, that the property has been haunted ever since, and those that have dared to enter the house on Halloween, have never been seen again.

Movie Review: Graduation Day (Blu-ray / DVD Combo)

With the Troma classics Sugar Cookies and Lust For Freedom currently available from Vinegar Syndrome the company has recently taken on one of the more well-known slashers of the early 1980's in Graduation Day. Troma did release Graduation Day several years back but it left much to be desired to say the least.  In the hands of Vinegar Syndrome though, improvement is inevitable, especially with the fact that it's making it's a Blu-ray debut in a combo pack from the genre DVD and Blu-ray producers.

Graduation Day was actually a spawn off the success of John Carpenter's Halloween as were many slashers from the era (The Burning, Friday the 13^th, The Prowler, just to name a few.)  The story surrounds a sudden death of an athlete and a series of murders that follow immediately after the young track star's death. When the deceased girl's sister, Anne (Patch Mackenzie, It's Alive III: Island of the Alive) arrives in town for her funeral the bodies begin to pile up of her peers in a variety of ways. Could Anne be taking some revenge kind of revenge on the students? Could it be the gym teacher played by the great Christopher George (City of the Living Dead, Enter the Ninja) or could it just be some random psycho with a blood-lust the killing of college kids?

Movie Review: Halloween III - Season of the Witch (Blu-ray)

I'm that guy. Seriously. There are only a couple of us out there, but I really enjoyed Halloween III: Season of the Witch. If you don't agree, you can take a hike.

The most substantive argument against this film is the fact that Michael Meyers did not appear and the storyline went in a completely different direction. As a little history, Golan and Globus, who owned the rights to the Halloween franchise, decided to depart from the Michael Meyers goodness because they felt that the slasher theme had become played out. They felt there wasn't much left to do with the sub-genre and would just be another tired 'killer with a knife' film. You have to admit, by 1983 the slasher genre had become repetitive and derivative and other types of -ive words. The Mutilator, the lesser Friday the 13th sequels (until, sadly, Corey Feldman revived it), New Year's Evil, the Silent Night, Deadly Night sequels... the list is endless. Until filmmakers like Wes Craven hit the scene in, the slasher was tired. You can imagine what tirelessly killing co-ed after co-ed would do to one's ambition. It's tiring. And those masks? Stuffy.

Movie Review: Terror Train (Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack)

Revenge themed horror surrounding nerds and bullies became a huge part of genre films in the 70’s and 80’s. For example, Massacre at Central High sort of stands out as a movie early on that pushed forth this often fun narrative that brings a rooting mentality to many viewers (Hell, I’m a nerd..Just not the smart kind).  The 1987 slasher Slaughter High also comes to mind as a highly enjoyable (though stupid) nerd on the rampage flick.  Roger Spottiswoode’s Terror Train nails down the same template while it not as serious in tone as Massacre at Central High nor as goofy as Slaughter High – it really captures a happy medium. Now it’s available for the first time in a special edition Blu-ray/Combo Pack from Scream Factory so now you can see Jamie Lee do her best to evade a geek for 90 minutes.

Terror Train begins in fairly cruel manner as our embattled nerd is being tricked by a group of college kids thinking he's going to get laid. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Alana Maxwell, a lovely and very innocent co-conspirator who gets mixed up with a prank that ends up with the nerd necking with a corpse wrangled by the evil medical students. I don’t know about you, but I’d be pissed! Years pass (as they always do in slashers) and he’s back for blood-soaked revenge on this group of douche-bags.

Dave and Kevin jump in on separate segments to talk about their favorite classic slasher movies. Dave starts with Halloween before getting into Scream and other great franchises. Kevin runs through the Friday the 13th series and figures out that American Psycho wasn't just about the greed of the 1980s.

Kevin also shares his thoughts on the Munsters remake Mockingbird Lane.
