Movie Review: Edward Lee's Bighead (2013)

We all know that I am a fan of Ed Lee. The visionary, hardcore horror novelist with titles like Goon, Flesh Gothic and Header has been on the cutting edge of terror fiction for many years. Often dismissed as a writer into gore for the sake of gore, his work is definitely unique but behind the grue there are messages and themes that resonate with the reader. Oh, and those messages and themes are stirred together with various bodily fluids and a healthy disregard for decorum and political correctness. That is what makes this particular film so surprising. After reading The Bighead I thought one thing: unfilmable. Not that it couldn't happen, it just wouldn't. No actor in their right mind would tackle this. I was wrong. These folks did and it was revolting, just like it should be.

Movie Review- Amateur Porn Star Killer (2006)

So remember the sequence in Henry: Portrait of a serial killer, they steal a camera and decide to film the their exploits? Imagine an entire film like that. The director once mentioned 8MM the highly underrated gem of a film as an influence. He was interested in the girl in the footage in that film. He was interested in her story. So Shane set out along with Michiko Jimenez to make this film. This film is horrifying, disturbing and disgusting. But it does it all without resorting to gore gags and this certainly IS NOT a torture porn film. This is a sick slice of life. A glimpse into true evil, more troubling then a serial killer in a hockey mask.

It's interesting when you watch a filmmaker mature over a period of about two months. Shane Ryan is currently the most exciting independent filmmaker's around. First the history, I befriended Shane when he was looking for people to review this film. It was impossible to find at the time and I was curious and looking for films that pushed boundaries. I contacted him and he was more then happy to send me a screener of this film.

Movie Review: Sexcula (1974, DVD)

"She'll suck more then your blood!" reads the tagline in this little seen Canadian produced porn flick. Let me state up front I'm a sucker for these genre mash-up vintage porno's. The cover promises a lot, does it live up to it? Yeah... it kind of does. But the actual back story to the making of the film is much more interesting.

See this film has always been a sort of myth, not because of it's over the top sexual content (It's tame for retro porn). But it was a rare little title that nobody ever really saw. Sure they knew the name but few ever saw the flick.

The film was financed by a very slick producers basically took advantage of a little tax loophole were after investing in a picture they'd get back anywhere from 40-100% of their investment.

Movie Review: The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann (2 Disc Collectors Edition)

So far 2011 has been quite a year for cult film director Radley Metzger (Camille 2000, Score, The Opening of Misty Beethoven). Cult Epics, Synapse Film's and now just recently Distripix/Video-X-Pix have released the director's 1970's erotica. Metzger used the name Henry Paris for his hardcore productions which are now being restored by Video-X-Pix in their Henry Paris Collection. Barbara Broadcast and The Opening of Misty Beethoven are a couple in the works, but first they have unleashed an impressive special edition of Paris' The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann.
