Movie Review: Phantom of the Grindhouse (2013; Independent Entertainment)

...yes, this viewer'll admit it!! He'll candidly admit that as an aspiring, freelance writer, and an ardent devotee of genre films, he's fantasized that one day, he'd be afforded the opportunity...whether it'd be a conveniently open-doored opportunity, or taking on the task himself, via blood, sweat & tears sacrifice, or perhaps a juxstapositioned financial windfall...to straddle a filmmaker's chair, try it on for size, and punch out a respectable celluloid-stripped production, wrought from the bowels of personal & heartfelt, albeit devil-may-care, 'throw-anything-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks', 'gonna-do-my-vision-no-matter-what' creativity...heck, if at the very least, to be able to stand back proudly, and...for good or for bad...say, "...hey, I did that...I did that...I did that!!" And this viewer's pretty sure that these were the very thoughts of filmmaker Chris Seaver, in his early days, when he envisioned outrageously rendered, WTF concepts, with colorful monikers like Mulva, Teen-Ape, the Filthy McNasty series, Sexsquatch and least we not forget about 'Blood Fart Lake'...uh, no siree-bob (...and yes, several of these are presently...er, or should I say 'shamelessly' gracing this viewer's film collection). Well, let it be said that CS is anything but inconsistent, especially with his latest off-the-wall outing...in title and basic premise, something which might invoke promising familiarity, nostalgia and intrigue, but in overall execution...the typically outrageous rubbish, one might expect from this filmmaker...the kind of crazed outrageousness, which one might find...well, admittedly amusing and funny, in a head-nodding '...jeez, I can't believe I'm watching this' kind of way...

Movie Review: One Touch of Venus (1948, Olive Films)

...Mr. Peabody, if you would, set the 'way-back' machine to a window of time...a span of years, from the mid-30's, to the late 40's...an uneasy and tumultuous era of progressively nation-involving conflict, culminating & peaking with World War II, and then, the post-war years...nations mourning their brave and battled dead. This was a time when whimsical escapism, fantastic flights of fantasy, and accompanying musical merriment held reign, in the cool and spectacled shrines...those movie palaces of yesteryear. 1941's "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" offered battling boxers, taken away too soon, and coming back to life, haven been given another chance...1937's "Topper" afforded us fun-loving earthbound ghosts, in search of a good deed...1947's "Down to Earth" brought down the very gods from above, solely for the purpose of inspiration...1943's "A Guy Named Joe" also had it's inspiring heavenly protagonist, though in the unlikely guise of a beloved, albeit deceased pilot...1947's "The Bishop's Wife" and 1934's "Death Takes a Holiday" had watchful heavenly angels, as well as brooding angels of death, assuming human form...1944's "Outward Bound" caught snapshot glimpses of a select few in a post-death, afterlife state of limbo, bound for otherworldly destinations...and even the goddess Venus herself, could not help but come down from the heavens, in search of true love, by way of a bumbling, albeit hopelessly lovelorn department store window dresser, in the light-hearted, musically laden, romantic fantasy/comedy fluff from 1948, "One Touch of Venus"...
