Movie Review: Vendetta (2015, Blu-ray)

Review By: James DePaolo

The Soska Sisters have had an interesting career so far, one that contradicts itself on every turn but interesting nonetheless. They debuted 5 years ago with a “Grindhouse” like film called Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Some fans loved it, and others loathed it, but the one thing that was for sure, everyone was talking. The follow up American Mary again split the community. The interesting thing during their director’s commentary Jen and Sylvia made an interesting revelation. “We will never do any remakes, sequels or non-horror films, we would never sell out. We respect our fans”. Their follow-up to American Mary was See No Evil 2 and then a segment in ABC’s of Death 2. And now, they are giving us a prison revenge film.

Vince McMahon has always had this hard on for Hollywood. WWE studios were born out of him wanting to create films using faces that he feels could attract a crowd. He failed trying to do with Hogan, which is not a fault of Vince it is all Hogan who has the personality and believability of a yard gnome. Then came The Rock, and all the money he made on films that he carried made Vince think that maybe he should try it again and create a studio and write and produce films and hire directors for zero to nothing to just fill a role that his people have no time for.

Movie Review: Overtime (2012)

Review by John Beutler

GUNS, GIRLS, ALIENS, ZOMBIES...AND CAKE, TOO!!! OK, folks...let me spin you a most excellent, albeit most unusual tale; it might sounds familiar at first, but the contrived, 'oh yeah, that's right' events abruptly skew into something not that far removed from the outer limits...and beyond. You see, we have here two able-bodied, well-skilled, black suited hitmen, trading amusing quips back and forth, and doing what they do best...BANG, BANG (...sound familiar??). One, a smart aleck, silver-tongued devil of a ladies' man, with his right hand deftly on the trigger, and his left hand, down at his...well, you get the picture. The other...equally armed, but this guy's a devoted family man, neurotically trying to hold things together...deathly afraid his wife wants to divorce him, and wouldn't you know it?? He forgets his son's birthday (...shame, shame, shame). No present. No cake. No party clown. No nothing. And so, our intrepid duo desperately sallies forth, to get what they need; but first, they need to finish their hit of the day.

Movie Review: Recoil (2012)

Professional wrestlers have never been known to be the most studied thespians - some are downright awful. Hulk "The Orange Golem" Hogan, while being a legend of the squared circle has been notorious for churning out tripe like Santa with Muscles and Suburban Commando that totally negate his amusing turn as "Thunder Lips" in Rocky III. A few others have done ok, like Roddy Piper (They Live), Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (The Rundown, Walking Tall) and amazingly the Texas Rattlesnake himself Stonecold Steve Austin (Condemned, The Expendables). In Austin's recent film from director Terry Miles' titled Recoil, he stars alongside Danny Trejo as vengeance seeking seeker of vengeance.

Recoil is a formulaic ass-kicker very much in the spirit of the better B-movie actioneers coming out of the 80's. It centers around ex-cop, Ryan Varett (Steve Austin) who has every reason to be pissed off following the murders of his family. Varett’s brand of revenge is as brutal and merciless as the men who killed his loved ones. Danny Trejo plays the main baddie, a gun-running, murderous biker named Drayke.

Movie Review: The Rise and Fall of WCW (2009)

When I was a kid, my little brother and I were glued to the television every Sunday morning. No, we weren't watching the ramblings of Oral Roberts. We were watching another mouth from the South, Jimmy Hart. The likes of Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Savage and the Iron Sheik graced our television screen. We loved every second of the WWF back in the 80s, but there was something else going on that we didn't really follow. We really didn't have cable, so the WCW went under our radar. Years after we stopped watching, Hulk Hogan signed with the WCW and eventually joined the infamous NWO. That's when I started watching.

World Championship Wrestling was much more than just a secondary league. It was a pioneering league that was first to hit the national stage. In the early days of professional wrestling, leagues were regional. Occasionally, a star would travel between leagues. It was unheard of for an entire league to travel, but that's what the NWA did. The owners made another smart move. They partnered with superstation TBS, which was owned by Ted Turner. Turner liked wrestling's popularity and gave them a slot on his national channel.
