Movie Review: The Orphan Killer (Blu-ray)

The Orphan Killer is quite possibly one of the better slasher films in the indie market right now in terms of good gore and bloodshed. The kills and torture were really well done. The story focuses around Marcus, and his baby sister Audrey. When he was 6 and she was 2, their parents were killed when they got robbed. They were sent to a home, where Marcus took his parents death harder than she did. He acted out and got more violent. The nuns punished him by making where this old theater mask and treating him like some sort of freak. While Audrey found a home and a family, Marcus took it hard and vowed revenge on her.

My problems with this film are the pacing and the use of the flashbacks. You get a great kill and some adrenaline going, and they whip up this flashback that made no sense. The music in some scenes did not fit…I would have loved less music and more mood of the characters and their emotions, rather than loud music, or some female folk singer. The other negative, was the set up to the barb wire scene. Talk about something that was just dragged out getting to the point, and the conversation he has with his sister once he strings her up was just horrible.

Movie Review: Tinto Brass: Maestro of Erotic Cinema (5-Disc Set, Blu-ray / DVD)

As an avid admirer of the wonders of the female form I've always thought that in many ways Russ Meyer is to curvaceous mammaries what Tinto Brass is to luscious derrieres. If you've seen a Tinto Brass film, you'll notice the man truly loves a lady's bottom and how it is presented artistically on film. Framing a pair of butt-cheeks is paramount in the presentation of Tinto's many beautiful subjects he puts in one of his films. Tinto has an amazing eye for the suppleness of a round derrière as well as those other womanly features such as large breasts, much like Russ' ability and has a knack for catching that appropriate jiggle. "Real" woman are highlighted so don't expect scrawny girls, mosquito bite breasts or shaved privates - get ready for some real curvaceous subjects on the opposite side of his camera lens. 

There is a new set entitled Tinto Brass: Maestro of Erotic Cinema from Cult Epics that highlights some of Tinto's finer more recent films - Monamour, the Blu-ray premiere of Black Angel, and also two other decedent slices of Italian naughtiness Private and Cheeky. Cult Epics celebrates a special October 24th 35mm print screening of Jörg Buttgereit's classic NEKROMANTIK at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles in anticipation of their new transfer of NEKROMANTIKin a Special Edition feature his first short film HOT LOVE, The Making of NEKROMANTIK, Jörg Buttgereit film trailers, featurette, and the isolated soundtrack from the film.

Jörg Buttgereit will appear at the Oct. 24th screening of NEKROMANTIK, bringing other short films along with him, during BeyondFest at the Egyptian Theatre, and also appear Saturday, October 26th at the Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, TX, in conjunction with the fundraising for GERMAN ANGST, an extreme horror film collaboration of Jörg Buttgereit (Nekromantik, Der Todesking) with Andreas Marschall (Tears of Kali, Masks), and Michael Kosakowski (Zero Killed). A long, hard walk down the dark alleyways of contemporary Berlin in stories of love, sex, and death, beginning production in January 2014.

The Awards winning film ‘Zero Killed’ is an unconventional hybrid of feature film and documentary, that makes viewers question their personal and social positions concerning ethical and moral values and taboos. This candid confessional of the taboo criminal fantasies, which exist in the minds of normal people is shocking. Fictional crime stories may flood today’s cinemas, but this copulation of fictional crimes challenges us all to look more deeply into the mirror, or more closely at our neighbor. Is evil inside all of us?

Movie Review: In a Glass Cage (1987, Blu-ray)

There was a time back in my more formative years (around the mid-90's) where I was on this kick to find the most disturbing or gross films ever made. Titles like Ruggero Deotato's Cannibal Holocaust, Pasolini's Salo: 120 Days of Sodom and Men Behind the Sun were some of my absolute favorites when it came to these amazing taboo-breaking films. Agusti Villaraonga's In a Glass Cage also stood high among these classic shockers.

At the time there was no DVD, nor a good quality version of In a Glass Cage (I actually watched it in Spanish and I suck at Spanish!). The 2000's came and genre DVD/Blu-ray producer, Cult Epics put out a very nice DVD version with English subtitles. Cult Epics has done some fine work with recent Blu-ray upgrades so it was only natural to make Villaronga's notorious 1987 film a reality.

Movie Review: Pig / 1334 (1998/2011, Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Sometimes films come out of nowhere and leave an impact and are hard to shake. When I popped in the Blu-ray for Pig & it's spiritual sequel 1338 I had no idea what I was in-store for. What I witnessed and what I felt is hard to say really. I haven't been punched in the gut this hard since “The Bunny Games” when it comes to baring a film down to it's purist and deranged artistic elements. 

 Much like The Bunny Games these two short films are not something you watch and enjoy. This isn't “entertainment” it's something deeply personal message hidden inside of a experimental psychological horror short. It's truly one of the more intense viewing experiences I've ever had. These are two short films that I will not soon forget.

Los Angeles, CA (January 2013.) In 1998 a 16mm experimental film was made, which became the inspiration of a new genre: torture film. PIG involves graphic violence with no use of special effects. PIG, about a killer and his victim, was the last project of Rozz Williams (formerly known of the rock group Christian Death) who committed suicide April 1, 1998 a month after the completion of the film. 13 Years later a follow up was made: 1334, an underground ghost story inspired on true occurrences following the death of Rozz Williams and the making of PIG. PIG stars (among James Hollan,) Rozz Williams who also created the score. 1334 contains a never before released soundtrack by Rozz Williams and the actor/musician Dante White Aliano, the film also stars Bill Oberst Jr. Both films were made by Nico B, the founder of Cult Epics.

Before I start my review of Cult Epics' Blu-ray release of Tinto Brass' Monamour and Kick The Cock I'd like to open with a quote from a very famous musical artist : "I like big butts and I cannot lie" ~ Sir Mix-A-Lot. Yes, it's true, I do, and that's why the Picasso of the Posterior, Tinto Brass ( Salon Kitty, Cheeky, Caligula) is one of my heroes. 2011 has really become a year for the films of Radley Metzger. Three prominent genre companies (Cult Epics, Synapse Films and Distribpix with his Henry Paris films) have spearheaded DVD and Blu-ray releases for the acclaimed cult film director. Cult Epics, who put Metzger's Score out in late 2010 have continued produce his features on the high-def format. Most recently Cult Epics released Lickerish Quartet (1970) and now the extended cut of Camille 2000 (1969).

Movie Review: Behind Convent Walls (Cult Epics)

Cinema Head Cheese has been pretty sparse in the nun-sploitation department, so I thought, why not kick off this sub-genre with Walerian Borowczyk’s classic contribution, Behind Convent Walls – from Cult Epics. For those of you unfamiliar with Walerian Borowczyk – he is Polish-born Catholic filmmaker who immigrated to France to pursue his passion of making movies, that were not only a visual feast but filled with very controversial subject-matter. One of those being, the Catholic church. His focus in Behind Convent Walls is clearly on the oppression of sexuality in the Christian faith – with nuns and a very cantankerous Mother Superior. These nuns look nothing like the ones you may have grown up with in Catholic school – many are actually quite lovely. Add an uninhibited-ness to the saucy mix and you have a convent filled with raging desire that would make Pope Benedict mess his papal gown.

Based on Stendahl’s story, Roman Walks, Behind Convent Walls tells the tale of a Mother Superior(Gabriella Giacobbe) that has nearly lost all control of the young nuns in her convent. This proves to be a monumental task, as virtually all of the young ladies are showing no sense of restraint when it comes to giving and receiving the carnal pleasures - they’re so forbidden . Behind Convent Walls is as much an exploitation film as it is an arthouse feature. Borowczyk’s choice to have Luciano Tovoli as his Cinematographer, truly, is what sets this – what could be your average nun-sploitation – into the realm of the sublime. Aside from Tovoli’s energetic camera , he also uses soft-focus - which only enhances the atmosphere to an almost dream-like feel. If you’ve only viewed Behind Convent Walls in its truncated form you’ll be thoroughly pleased with Cult Epic’s release, as it’s completely uncut – featuring the often excised “Nun and wooden dildo scene”. This scene is divine in its presentation, and is sure to make all God-fearing folk scramble for their rosary beads.
The picture quality of Cult Epics' release of Behind Convent Walls is very good. Their isn't any visible print damage and grain is at a bare minimum. The fact that this is the uncut version of the film , it's very impressive. This release is also in it's original aspect ratio, 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. The audio is quite solid and unforgettable the organ music sounds clearer than ever before. You also have both Italian and English subtitle options.

Supplementary materials are featured on this disc as well : Behind The Walls (featurette), an interview with Cinematographer extraordinaire, Luciano Tovoli and a Photo and Lobby Card gallery. The Behind The Walls featurette isn't very long, but for that duration we are given many facts on Behind Convent Walls, Walerian Borowczyk's career and censorship. Borowczyk historians, Marc Morris, Sam Dunn and Daniel Bird provide great insight on the Polish filmmaker.

Behind Convent Walls gets first-rate treatment overall in this Cult Epics’ release.
