Movie Review: Tinto Brass: Maestro of Erotic Cinema (5-Disc Set, Blu-ray / DVD)

As an avid admirer of the wonders of the female form I've always thought that in many ways Russ Meyer is to curvaceous mammaries what Tinto Brass is to luscious derrieres. If you've seen a Tinto Brass film, you'll notice the man truly loves a lady's bottom and how it is presented artistically on film. Framing a pair of butt-cheeks is paramount in the presentation of Tinto's many beautiful subjects he puts in one of his films. Tinto has an amazing eye for the suppleness of a round derrière as well as those other womanly features such as large breasts, much like Russ' ability and has a knack for catching that appropriate jiggle. "Real" woman are highlighted so don't expect scrawny girls, mosquito bite breasts or shaved privates - get ready for some real curvaceous subjects on the opposite side of his camera lens. 

There is a new set entitled Tinto Brass: Maestro of Erotic Cinema from Cult Epics that highlights some of Tinto's finer more recent films - Monamour, the Blu-ray premiere of Black Angel, and also two other decedent slices of Italian naughtiness Private and Cheeky. Could this be an essential addition to the collections of European erotica enthusiasts? Let's have a look!

Tinto Brass? Lots of ass. But you already knew that.

In this frenetic anthology film, cinema’s most perverse proctologist looks at six very sexy couples. “Alibi:” A vacationing couple in Morocco, celebrating their seventh anniversary stave off that itch by inviting their bellhop to participate in some fun and games. “Double Trouble:” She cheats on her TV network president hubby with an actor in a steamy game of tennis. He cheats on his wife with his secretary. It all turns out alright in the end. “Two Hearts and a Hut:” A maid at a Swiss resort joins an older couple for lesbian and sadomasochistic scenes in exchange for large tips to fund their dream hotel with her bellhop boyfriend. “Jolly Bangs:” A faithless wife entertains her husband at the beach with steamy tales of past indiscretions. “Evil to Him Who Thinks Evil:” An engaged couple swings with a British couple only for the husband to learn that his betrothed offered up her only virginal orifice in the ordeal. “Call me a pig, ‘cause I like it!” A married couple on holiday in London provide some voyeuristic enjoyment for someone watching through a window – but they’re in for a rude surprise!

These sort of soft-core romps are a bit immune to criticism. They seem to sum up the five word phrase: It is what it is. The Blu-Ray from Cult Epics is especially bright and vibrant, befitting the oversaturated color palette. All of the sets feature the same Art Deco semi-circle design, reiterating Brass’ abiding fascination with the female derriere.

Los Angeles, CA (January 2013.) In 1998 a 16mm experimental film was made, which became the inspiration of a new genre: torture film. PIG involves graphic violence with no use of special effects. PIG, about a killer and his victim, was the last project of Rozz Williams (formerly known of the rock group Christian Death) who committed suicide April 1, 1998 a month after the completion of the film. 13 Years later a follow up was made: 1334, an underground ghost story inspired on true occurrences following the death of Rozz Williams and the making of PIG. PIG stars (among James Hollan,) Rozz Williams who also created the score. 1334 contains a never before released soundtrack by Rozz Williams and the actor/musician Dante White Aliano, the film also stars Bill Oberst Jr. Both films were made by Nico B, the founder of Cult Epics.

Before I start my review of Cult Epics' Blu-ray release of Tinto Brass' Monamour and Kick The Cock I'd like to open with a quote from a very famous musical artist : "I like big butts and I cannot lie" ~ Sir Mix-A-Lot. Yes, it's true, I do, and that's why the Picasso of the Posterior, Tinto Brass ( Salon Kitty, Cheeky, Caligula) is one of my heroes. Movie Review: The Voyeur

Take a look to the left at the cover of Brass's soft core erotica film, "The Voyeur (L'uomo Che Guarda)". Like what you see? Well good because Voyeur is chalk full of dairy aire supplied from naked curvaceous European women. This is a Tinto Brass film and if your acquainted with his work then you know what you're in for. The Voyeur however is my first foray into Tinto's work. I've known about him and his legendary status as an erotica filmmaker but have never had the chance to see it for myself until now. I can't say this is the best place to start in his vast catalog (Caligula, Salon Kitty) but it definitely suffices. The plot centers around Eduardo "Dodo" who is, you guessed it, a voyeur.

The plot goes like this. Dodo is a professor of French literature and lives in a nice penthouse with his bed ridden father Alberto and busty in house nurse Fausta. Silvia, Eduardo's blonde and beautiful wife has left him for another man. Dodo becomes extremely jealous and turns to his voyeur fetish in her absence. Dodo begins to watch everyone around him perform sexual acts. Dodo even secretly watches Fausta as she does more than just take care of Alberto, at his request. Eduardo also daydreams frequently, especially about Silvia. He also has flashbacks from when Dodo was younger about watching his mother and father having sex. All of this ties in together to form a predictable finale but it is an enjoyable watch.
