Movie Review: Monster (One 7 Movies, 1953)

If you’re in the mood to expand your Mexican horror film viewing horizons look no further than Italian cult movie distributor One 7 Movies' latest, Monster. Mexico has brought us some cool horror flicks over the years with movies like The Brainiac, Curse of the Crying Woman and the awesome awfulness of Night of the Bloody Apes. Monster is an obscurity that has slipped through my paws over the years so it's nice to finally see it on any format.

Chano Ureta's Monster is essentially a different take on Frankenstein and Phantom of the Opera with a few tweaks here and there. We start off in what is essentially the Mexican answer to the Regal Beagle, where Nora, a young attractive reporter is meeting her boss to talk about the mysterious Dr. Ling. Nora really wants to interview Ling and find out just a little bit more about his "eccentricities". What she doesn't know of course is that he is a deformed/maniac/genius who's been hiding his hideous face over the years by using a scarf and various masks. The best way to describe Ling's features would be Rocky Dennis from Mask crossed with a mixture of character-actor Irwin Keyes.

Movie Review: Erotic Escape (1985, One 7 Movies)

Wow, when I saw this DVD cover I was like "Hot Damn". ONE 7 Movies a new DVD company which is always a good thing especially these days. And even more so when they are releasing some fun and different titles.  It has a nice bold cover  (Censored though but I guess it’s easier to get it in stores and such) then on the back of the DVD cover it reads..“Erotic Escape is a long lost guilty pleasure available for the first time in DVD. Directed by Nello Rossati of the Sensuous Nurse fame, the film features lots of nudity and over the top violence. Drenched with in mud with nothing to cover her breathtaking body, Eleonora Vallone runs for her life and gets laid to to kill!” HOT DAMN!!! I’m ready to get my perv on….

Movie Review: Alien from the Deep (2011, One 7 Movies)

As everyone knows, the 80's were the Italian's golden age of trash cinema. From splatter classics to Hollywood rip-offs, they knew how to make some damn entertaining films. Alien and it's action packed sequel Aliens are two flicks that seem to spawn hundreds of copycats. Alien from the Deep, if you didn't guess, is one of the spawn of those hundred copycats. Despite being slower than a Power Loader for the first 40 mins or so, AftD is exactly what you would expect from Margheriti....schlocky fun.

Movie Review: Sex, Demons and Death (aka Diabolicamente... Letizia, 1975)

I'm not exactly sure what to think of Sex, Demons and Death. At the start of the movie, a guy that looks like a better looking Mick Jagger talks to his wife over the phone, and you learn that she can't have kids. They decide to let the wife's niece move in as she promised her dead sister that she would take care of the orphan. When the husband, known as the architect, picks up the niece, Letizia, the pervy uncleness begins.

Movie Review: Exotic Malice (1981)

In previous reviews of Joe D'Amato's films, I've professed great admiration for the Italian king of Euro-sleaze. Don't get me wrong, some of his films are absolute shit and tremendously boring (See Sexy Pirates) but even the most watery of D'Amato's turds contain some elements to please cinematic sadists - like myself - to relish. Exotic Malice is yet another rare filthy pastaland porno from Joe that was made around the same time he did Sex and Black Magic and Porno Holocaust. Porno actor, Mark Shannon, often appeared in D'Amato's early 80's sex films - here though he's the star along with Anthropophagous himself, George Eastman. Shannon's famous for blowing loads but infamous for performing in sex scenes with a horrible case of genital warts on his sack. The infamous warts are unfortunately present here in Exotic Malice. Does that ruin the film? Let's have a look.

Movie Review: Sexy Pirates (1998)

Joe D'Amato rarely loses with this viewer. Even with some of the more paltry offerings from the Italian genre hopper, I can find some silver lining. It could be a nice pair of boobs, Laura Gemser, the antics of Pedro The Horse, a gnarly cannibal eating a fetus - and depending on your taste, Mark Shannon's scrotum. Several years ago I discovered Joe thanks to the late-great writer, Chas. Balun. Balun wrote an excellent article in one of the earlier editions of Gorezone magazine that made me want to seek this director's films. First it was Anthropophagous, then Buio Omega (Buried Alive) and after that, I was in love. That brings me to Sexy Pirates (aka I Predatori delle Antille), directed under one of his several pseudonyms, David Hills. The title sounds perfect and the cover One 7 Movies uses is even more inviting. Could this be a lost D’ Amato classic or will it break this swashbuckling reviewer?

Movie Review: The Real Cannibal Holocaust (1976, One 7 Movies)

Shockumentaries and Mondo films are easily one the most maligned genres around for obvious reasons. It's almost to be expected considering the content usually fills the running time of films like Africa Ama, Mondo Dulce Y Cruel, Brutes and Savages or any of the films contained on Blue Underground's popular Mondo Collection. I may hang my head a little in saying this, but, I'm a fan these sensationalistic, offensive and often disgusting films. Unfortunately the pickens for mondo fans on DVD and Blu-ray have been slim over the past few years. One 7 Movies, however, have just released Akira Ide's Real Cannibal Holocaust (Originally titled Nuova Guinea, Isola dei Cannibali).
