Movie Review: Things (1989)

Severin Films’ even more eclectic label Intervision has shown some consistency on the unpredictability of their title choices. Case in point, Barry J. Gillis’ and Andrew Jordan's mind-numbingly ridiculuous Things. If you have yet to see Things, it really is kind of crazy and shockingly amusing in a Tommy Wiseau's The Room kind of way. Ironically Severin’s release  of Birdemic has been labeled The Room for the horror crowd. As a big fan of The Room, this little Canadian number feels a lot closer, and just as inept.

Don Drake (Barry J. Gillis) and Fred Horton (Bruce Roach) are a couple of beer chugging hosers hanging out in a house that’s infested with mutated ants that look sort of like the spawn creatures from The Deadly Spawn.  Sounds like a fun creature? Well, after what seems to be an hour of beer drinking, watching TV and putting bugs in each others sandwiches we eventually get to see them. Yes, it's a slow burn, much like the clap. Things can be incredibly tedious at times with so much lame padding, after a while though it grows on you.

Movie Review: Zoom In: Sex Apartments (1980)

After a quickie with her husband before seeing him off for a bicycling race, Saeko (Yuko Araragi), is hit with a rock by a masked man with black gloves and brutally raped while on her way to visit her lover. Her life is spared but five years later shocking murders begin to befall the residents of the Kibougahara Apartment building.  The masked psycho is busy at work, torturing, raping and setting his victims genitals on fire.  It doesn't take Saeko long before she realizes her lover is the culprit, and she is caught in a world between fear and arousal.....a world filled with sex, lies and gruesome murders.

Movie Review: Father's Day (2011, Troma)

Being a fan of Troma flicks for over 25 years now, one thing I have learned to live with is the fact that I will inevitably have to wade through twenty horrible films by them before I find that one gem. (And that's being generous) In other words, being a Troma fan is like having a heroin-addicted best friend, one I can pretty much always count on to steal from me and break my heart over and over again.....and yet I just never seem to have the heart to kick to the curb.Now with that being said, I highly recommend you drop what your doing, go out and get your hands on Troma's Father's Day. To say this movie is fun is an understatement, to say its fucked up and completely inappropriate on about a hundred different levels is pretty accurate. To say its a Troma movie is almost beyond belief.

Movie/Music Review: Fix: The Ministry Movie (2011, Gigantic Pictures)

Rising from obscurity in the 90‘s, a band with a unique sound emerged to inspire an entirely new genre in the rock/metal scene. The genre is known as Industrial and the band was called Ministry. Their music was a mirror reflection of their lifestyle, chaotic and intense.

What this documentary captures are the lifestyle, musings, fears and hopelessly flawed coping mechanisms of Al Jourgensen, the lead singer for Ministry. Trapped within the confines of rock super-stardom, record contracts and life on the road, his only escape is his drug use.

Movie Review: Death of a Snowman (1978)

December sees Midnite Movie Mamacita showing a bunch of blaxploitation pictures, especially Dr Black Mr Hyde, which I'm really looking forward to. Black Christmas sounds like one but isn't, and Death of a Snowman is a curious mix of blaxploitation and other genres. It's a South African crime film that starts off with the bizarre concept of having the good guys be a white cop and a black journalist. In the South Africa of 1978?! Wow, talk about fantasy. They're played by Nigel Davenport and Ken Gampu respectively and while both try very much, neither are believable.

Someone called War on Crime is killing leading criminals on the streets of Johannesburg and naturally the cops want to catch him. Gampu's character, Steve Chaka, hardly a politically correct name for a black South African, wants to catch him too but does have sympathy with the ends if not the means. Of course not all is as it seems and War on Crime is doing his work for a reason that doesn't match the high morals that he pretends to.

Movie Review: Sex and Black Magic (1980, One 7 Films)

It's very rare that there's been a time when I've passed up on a trashy offering from Italian cult film director, Joe D'Amato. Not many film makers can say that they've done slashers, thrillers, giallos, hardcore and soft-core porn, westerns and numerous other genres. Does that mean he's a world class director? God no! One 7 Films has been after my euro-sleaze loving heart with their recent releases. After kicking off the company label with the solid erotic thriller Scandalous Gilda the company has just started to unleash some of D'Amato's more obscure titles like Sexy Pirates, Chinese Kamasutra and today's ultra-filthy treat, Sex and Black Magic (Aka Orgasmo Nero).

Movie Review: Eyes of the Chameleon

So, at first glance, Eyes of the Chameleon really has a lot going against it. First and foremost, it's a Troma release. Gentle reader, you may or may not know this, but Uncle Lloyd has owed me $50 for about ten years now. When you are as broke as I am, that $50 could be a downright windfall. Secondly, I'm not thrilled about the title. It kind of sounds like an episode title for the 1970s Wonder Woman show. As in, watch now as Lynda Carter stars as Wonder Woman in Eyes of the Chameleon! You see what I mean? But, before I even popped the movie in the DVD player, my eyes fell across music to my, well, my eyes... directed by Ron Atkins. Ron FREAKING Atkins. I knew, at that point, that this film was going to be a wetwork-laden freak show... which is a good thing, if you were confused.

Long story short, Ron Atkins is the director of gonzo cult films like Necromaniac, Schizophreniac, Eat the Rich, Mutilation Mile (highly recommended by the way) and many more. So, if you are familiar with Ron's work, get ready. If not, then strap your ass in. I was a little disappointed to see that Ron hadn't written Eyes of the Chameleon as well, being the blubbering fanboy that I am, but I digress.

Movie Review: The Real Cannibal Holocaust (1976, One 7 Movies)

Shockumentaries and Mondo films are easily one the most maligned genres around for obvious reasons. It's almost to be expected considering the content usually fills the running time of films like Africa Ama, Mondo Dulce Y Cruel, Brutes and Savages or any of the films contained on Blue Underground's popular Mondo Collection. I may hang my head a little in saying this, but, I'm a fan these sensationalistic, offensive and often disgusting films. Unfortunately the pickens for mondo fans on DVD and Blu-ray have been slim over the past few years. One 7 Movies, however, have just released Akira Ide's Real Cannibal Holocaust (Originally titled Nuova Guinea, Isola dei Cannibali).

Movie Review: Blood Junkie (2010, Troma)

In Troma's nearly four decade run as one of the top independent film companies there have been numerous slasher flicks to flood the massive cult film library out of Hell's Kitchen. Graduation Day, Mothers Day are some great examples of quality Troma slasher offerings but on the flipside there have been some turds like Blood Hook and Dead Dudes in the House. Blood Junkie is a recent film from director Drew Rosa that attempts to line itself up with the "quality" slasher classics mentioned above.

Movie Review: Chinese Kamasutra (1993)

See that gorgeous stripper on the cover of One 7’s release of Joe D’amato’s sleazy oddity, Chinese Kamasutra? Enjoy that photo on the cover all you want, because that’s the only place your going to see her, as unfortunately this lovely tart doesn’t make an appearance anywhere in the feature. It's a shame that the cover model so prominently displayed is absent but the sexy Georgia Emerald does what she can to heat up this 1993 D'Amato entry . While not as sexy as the mystery tramp-stamp covered stripper on the box, she’s still very pleasing to the eye when in the buff. I know, it's minor, but it is the cover.

Movie Review: Straight Up - Helicopters In Action (Blu-Ray)

We have yet to do a review of any of the several IMAX DVDS or Blu-Rays here at the Cheese. That however, is going to change, as we in our ever changing journey to be the versatile and unique haven for film aficionados, are taking a break from the many horror and cult titles(for at least this review)that you see so often as the focus on the site. Today, it’s Straight Up : Helicopters in Action (Blu-Ray edition) from Vista Point Entertainment in association with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

Legendary actor, Martin Sheen lends his voice to the narration of this IMAX feature, directed by David Douglas. Sheen is solid, and the narration is very simple and devoid of too much technical details that may leave those unfamiliar with the inner workings of Apaches and Cobras scratching their heads. Viewers are treated to a rich variety of helicopters in this documentary( more than a dozen total) that fly on rescue missions, deliver aid to people in need and even repair power lines; at the same time putting the viewer, right in the action.
