Movie Review: Snow Shark (2011)

“Snow Shark”... were should I begin? Let's start off by saying I love two things more then life itself. Coffee & cigarettes... whoops I mean shark movies and no budget films. Well Snow Shark is a shark movie and it definitely was shot for no money.

For me the lower the budget of a film is the more I like it. I can appreciate C-grade acting, shoddy editing, dim photography, zero production design and low grade digital cinema. Snow shark possesses all of those qualities and then some. 

Movie Review: Bait 3D (DVD/Blu-ray Combo/ 2012)

When Peter Benchley's remarkable novel Jaws was adapted for the screen by Steven Spielberg, no one could ever look at going in the ocean the same - much less the bathtub. Naturally there were knock-offs that took the template of Jaws, like the Italian cash-in The Last Jaws (The creators of The Last Jaws even stole the soundtrack!!).

It wasn't always the shark film either that tried to duplicate the success of Jaws. Joe Dante's fantastic Piranha (original) is a good example of that. We do though occasionally get a fun new spin on the shark film - like with Renny Harlin's Deep Blue Sea. The Aussie creature feature Bait has some similarities to Deep Blue Sea but it thankfully brings about a few original turns. Anchor Bay has just recently released Kimble Rendall’s Bait 3D on the masses of shark movie enthusiasts and will not disappoint those looking for a departure from the Sy Fy Channel cheese-fests.

Movie Review: Jersey Shore Shark Attack (2012, Anchor Bay)

With summer in full swing and a record-breaking 4th of July crowd soaking up the boardwalk sun, Seaside Heights is the place to be in New Jersey. But when an illegal coastal drilling operation inadvertently unleashes a horde of man-eating albino bull sharks, the coastal town is hurled into chaos, and its up to a local bunch of Italian beach bums led by TC, aka- The Complication (Jeremy Luke), his band of  shirtless Guido sidekicks and his sometimes girlfriend Nooki (Melissa Molinaro), to save the day, save the party and save the town.

Movie Review: The Reef (2010, Blu-Ray)

Open Water was a huge hit in 2003. With the constraints of a low budget of $500,000 dollars it went on to make a hundred times that in worldwide sales. I’ll give director Chris Kentis and his producers a pat on the back for that. That’s an amazing accomplishment. Maybe I’m in the minority though because Open Water bored me to tears. Andrew Traucki’s The Reef has been compared to said film. Going into this I was hoping the comparisons weren’t of all the negatives that littered the highly overrated Open Water. Let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised.
