Movie Review: State of Emergency (2011, Image)

...ya' know?? Being a devoted fan of the 'zombie' movie genre, as well-worn and beaten-to-'undeadth' as the genre is, this viewer cannot help but feel compelled to wade through every potential 'hit & miss' zombie flick out there, with hopes of catching those few and far between 'hits', among the sea of 'misses'...and I have to readily admit, at first glance of the DVD cover art for 2011's "State of Emergency", I had genuine hopes for a kick-ass horror film, considering the armed and haggard look at the supposed 'hero' on the cover...atop an overturned vehicle...aiming sharply at a ravagingly overwhelming barrage of the living dead, surrounding him. I mean, really...the guy LOOKED just like martial arts star Don 'The Dragon' Wilson, and anyone who has seen Don's movies, which were prevalent, over the past 30 some odd years, you know that there's no lack of kick-ass action in HIS films. Well...uh, no...regrettfully, after having partaken of the film, I can now say...uh no, it WASN'T Don, as the character on the cover...and although this guy would probably kick some serious butt in any other zombie flick...in THIS one, well...the flesh-eating horrors are so minimal, the hapless guy on the cover of the DVD, seems almost displaced in this flick. But then, I'm getting ahead of myself, ain't I??...

Movie Review: All Superheroes Must Die (2012, Blu-ray)

Writer/Director/Actor Jason Trost surprised a few of us here at the Cheese with his excellent film The FP. The independent jack-of-all trades is back with his own take on the superhero sub-genre with the extremely dark All Superheroes Must Die from Image Entertainment.

All Superheroes Must Die follows the plight of four superheroes led by Charge (Jason Trost). Each of the heroes has just woken up in a different location after being drugged and given a tiny wound on their wrists. As it turns out all of these superhuman’s have lost their strength thanks to a criminal mastermind named Rickshaw (played by veteran actor James Remar, The Cotton Club, The Long Riders).

Movie Review: Chillerama (2011, Blu-ray)

Growing up in the early 80’s I kind of caught on to the end of the drive-in horror/cult phenomenon that helped so many little independent genre films become slices of film history. I never took in an all-nighter or a triple-bill but I did get to see Friday The 13^th III in 3D when I was at the impressionable age of six. I wish I did grow up at least ten years earlier so could enjoy that whole atmosphere that directors Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City) Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen), Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn II) Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs) put together in anthology form with Image Entertainment's Chillerama.

Movie Review: Midnight Son (2012)

The vampire genre has become tired and boring to me. I just can't get excited about it anymore. I refuse to watch Twilight. I don't like True Blood. Even the original Dracula isn't interesting to me anymore. Within the first ten minutes of Midnight Son, I was happy. This was not the same old vampire story. A young man named Jacob seems to be dealing with medical issues. He has liver issues, can't stop eating and eventually faints at work. We steadily build through his journey in dealing with a change that he can't stop.

Frank is, what on the surface appears to be one of the worlds greatest fuck-ups. In order to prove his fatherhood potential to his pregnant girlfriend who has just dumped him, and in an act of desperation, he “kidnaps” her 12 year old nephew Bo, and takes him along on his best friend Casper’s weekend canoe trip of debauchery, which they have dubbed their “Tour de Pussy”. The wife and girlfriend of the two are under the impression this is merely a boys weekend in the country and have no idea the canoe trip has a scheduled stop at a music festival and a brothel.

For far too long gamers have been shown no love or respect in the movies. Well, those days are now over thanks to the cold-blooded awesomeness of the Trost brothers and Image Entertainment’s new movie, The FP. A movie so bad that it is actually border-line genius.

In a dystopian future, a never-ending turf war rages. Two rival gangs feud for control of rural wasteland Frazier Park (The FP) in the deadly arena of competitive dance-fight video game “Beat-Beat Revelation.” After hometown hero BTRO is slain on the dance platform by thug leader L Dubba E (Lee Valmassy), His protege younger brother JTRO (Jason Trost) goes into isolation, chopping down trees in the mountains with a troupe of lumberjacks, vowing never to dance again. One year later The FP is in ruins, as the rival gang has not only taken control of the town but of its most precious resource, the liquor store, and is replacing the towns alcoholic life's-blood with meth and a wicked little pill known as Black Cock. Now JTRO must find the courage to return and restore order (as well as the liquor supply) in a ruthless battle for revenge that can only leave one man dancing.

Movie Review: The Theatre Bizarre (2011)

There's been much talk over the past six months on how the horror anthology has made its triumphant return.  The 70’s and 80’s, for me, had some of my favorites: Vault of Horror, Tales From the Crypt, Trilogy of Terror, Creepshow and From a Whisper to a Scream were all titles that I enjoyed viewing. When approached correctly, the anthology film can be like a tremendous food sampler at your favorite hole-in the- wall-bar; when it isn’t, it’s a shitty appetizer dish at Applebee’s.

David Gregory of Severin films is an obvious admirer of the format. So much so he brought together the talents of six fine genre film directors: Karim Hussain (Subconscious Cruelty), Douglas Buck (Cutting Moments) , Buddy Giovinazzo (Combat Shock), Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead), Richard Stanley (Hardware) and Jeremy Kasten. Gregory even contributes his own entry to this strong group.

Movie Review: National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus (2012)

I've always been a big fan of Will Sasso (Mad TV, Best in Show, Happy Gilmore) but the lumpy comic definitely has his detractors. Most of the naysayers aren't too happy that he's playing Curly in the new The Three Stooges movie. Curly maybe somewhat sacred in comedy lore but is still don't understand the fuss because he's versitale enough... and, well, he's fat and bald. Recently I got to see Sasso star in Image Entertainment's release of Jeff Kanew's National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus. Kanew's a capable comedic director - he did helm the 80's comedy classic Revenge of the Nerds - and Sasso's several years of being the funny fat guy on Mad TV give me some hope.

Movie Review: Little Deaths (2011)

I love a good anthology. I just watched and enjoyed Image Entertainment's recent Chillerama and well folks, we have yet another called Little Deaths. This film is a completely different animal than the playful, humorous Chillerama. Little Deaths, pure and simple, is a take-no-prisoners taboo-busting horror movie. Some of the best horror anthologies come from Britain, which is exactly where our feature here was produced, written and directed. Genre stand-out, Simon Rumley (Red, White and Blue) is joined by Sean Hogan and Andrew Parkinson to create this sinister trilogy.

Movie Review: Chromeskull: Laid to Rest II (Blu-ray)

I've always had a serious itch for slasher films. The masked-psycho has always been fun so it was only natural that I'd dig Robert Hall's ultra-gory slasher Laid To Rest. Well, Chromeskull is back - he's brought along his nifty knife, inventive kills and plot holes galore that made the first such a sadistic thrill. I love this shit!

In Chromeskull: Laid To Rest II, Chromeskull ( Nick Principe ) has somehow miraculously survived an acid attack that took him by surprise in the first film. He's in bad shape, but he's still breathing. It also appears that our killer who really had no background to speak of in the original film is the head of what is called "The Agency". What "The Agency" does is pretty much a mystery. One of Chromeskull's pals, Preston ( Brian Austin Green, Beverly Hills 90210 ) is among his most loyal associates. Preston however, has something else up his sleeve with Chromeskull on the mend.

Growing up Catholic and being enrolled in Catholic School until the ninth grade, I naturally had many experiences both positive and negative with nuns. Most of which were unfortunately the latter. These sisters weren’t the easiest on the eyes, as most resembled Robbie Coltrane's drag portrayal from Nuns on the Run. Joseph Guzman's Nude Nuns with Big Guns doesn't have the fugly nuns that I grew up with on display, but it does offer more than enough gratuitous skin and gun-toting, revenge-seeking nuns.

Movie Review: The Blood Trilogy (1963-1965, Blu-Ray)

For the better part of twenty years now, Something Weird Video has unleashed the rare, the sexy, the gory and the just plain ridiculous upon VHS, DVD owners and now, amazingly, the Blu-Ray market. Yes, I said it, Something Weird Video is now releasing titles in high-definition! These aren’t obscurities like Doctor Doom, The Atomic Brain and Johnny Firecloud but four of the biggest titles in their library – Basket Case and Herschell Gordon Lewis’ The Blood Trilogy (Blood Feast, 2000 Maniacs and Color Me Blood Red). I’ve been waiting for the day to see HG Lewis’ most famous films on the Blu-ray format, and now it’s here.
