Movie Review: Full Moon's Grindhouse Collection - Dreamaniac, Mutant Hunt & Famous T&A

Full Moon Features are releasing several films from the old Wizard Video label onto the masses through their website at ten bucks a pop under the title Full Moon's Grindhouse Collection. Three of those releases I've gotten a chance to take a peek at - Dreamaniac, Famous T&A and Mutant Hunt.

One of those films is David DeCoteau's 1986 schlock-rich nugget Dreamaniac. DeCoteau has made a name for himself as being one of the more consistent B movie filmmakers to get behind a camera over the past 30 years. Most frequently he's been working with none other than Charles Band. I know what your thinking, "what's Clint Howard doing on the cover of this movie?". That isn't Clint folks, it's the knife-wielding psycho-bitch who slices and dices the majority of the cast. Not shockingly for a DeCoteau film, Dreamaniac opens with a dream sequence that comes complete with a fog machine, bright gels and some very gratuitous shots of shaved male buttocks. Ass is here in abundance, both clothed and unclothed are on display with lecherous close-ups.

Movie Review: Jessicka Rabid (2010, Mathew Reel)

This is the story of Jessicka, (played by Elske McCain) a girl who suffers an excruciatingly abusive life at the hands of cousin's Brad (Jeff Sisson) and Marley (Trent Haaga). Jessicka is kept in a dog cage in the garage, treated just like any other dog owned by trailer trash along with the other family dog, but unlike the 4 legged one, Jessicka is used as a collared sex slave. She is taken out of her cage only when it's time to service her cousins or drugged up and whored out to groups of strangers. Good times indeed. At one point, Jessica is bitten by the other dog and, yes... you guessed it, catches rabies, escapes from her cage, somehow has the presence of mind to file her teeth down and then the vengeful fun begins.

Movie Review: Evil Bong 3: The Wrath of Bong (2011)

I haven't seen the first two Evil Bong movies, but I am a fan of silly slasher films. I like the crazy creatures, such as the GingerDead Man or the Leprechaun. I wasn't sure how a bong would kill people, but I thought I'd give it a try. It had a decent start that was somewhat similar to Stephen King's segment of Creepshow. It really turned into a whole lot of nothing with puppets. Eh, it could have been worse.

Movie Review: The Sweet Life (2011)

I'm not a huge fan of romantic comedies, and The Sweet Life promises to be the romantic comedy for people who hate them. I think that's because it will make you hate them even more. The problem I have with this being a romantic comedy is the comedy part. There was really nothing funny about this movie. I don't know if they thought that having Joan Jett in a small role would help, but it didn't. Even worse is her lackluster theme song.

As everyone knows, the 80's were the Italian's golden age of trash cinema. From splatter classics to Hollywood rip-offs, they knew how to make some damn entertaining films. Alien and it's action packed sequel Aliens are two flicks that seem to spawn hundreds of copycats. Alien from the Deep, if you didn't guess, is one of the spawn of those hundred copycats. Despite being slower than a Power Loader for the first 40 mins or so, AftD is exactly what you would expect from Margheriti....schlocky fun.

Of all the many atrocities low budget cinema has thrust upon us thus far, the closest anyone has ever really got to Manos: The Hands of Fate is this one, whose title describes the film far better than its monster. Like Manos, this is mostly the product of one man who promptly left the movie business, though he had previously made Street-Fighter in 1959. The difference is that this time out there's a back story that's not just interesting, it's far more interesting than the actual movie itself. That one man is Arthur N White, a small scale conman from Connecticut who came up with a new name and a new gimmick every time the wind changed, making this film under two pseudonyms. As A J Nelson, he produced it, edited it and directed it. As Vic Savage, he played the lead role of Martin Gordon. His real role was as conman though, because the movie itself was the gimmick and during a break in filming he simply packed up and left town with the money.

I love Aussie movies, probably because there's such an honesty to the actors and filmmakers that's hard to find anywhere else. There's plenty of that here, as an ensemble of characters are thrust together to make a movie. That isn't this movie, by the way, because this is a movie about a movie, which is being made by an arrogant director called Mike and a female producer called Bobby in the Australian outback. In what really boils down to being a slasher movie, this provides a much more interesting set of victims than your standard bunch of American teens at a holiday camp. There are a host of people involved, starting with Mike, who calls his movie 'an enigmatic mystery à la Picnic at Hanging Rock.' With guns. He decides he wants guns, even though his film is set in 1942, so you can imagine how on the ball he is. 'You're the cow and I'm the shepherd,' he tells an actress called Matilda during her audition, because he isn't too good at analogies.

This week, Kevin Moyers flies solo, and he decides to steer clear of movies. That's mostly because he didn't watch any. Instead, he tackles many other categories that are often neglected at The Cheese.

In TV, Kevin talks about the latest season of The Walking Dead, and he gets into the gluttonous Man vs. Food.

He talks about a book given to him by David Hayes called Santa Steps Out. He will never look at the holidays the same again.

He gets into some of his new favorite podcasts including Mohr Stories with Jay Mohr, The Todd Glass Show and the Christopher Titus Podcast. That leads him into a stack of comedy recommendations that include the previous comics as well as Patrice O'Neal, Greg Giraldo, George Carlin and others.

Kevin wraps up with music, and talks about the album Goblin from Tyler, The Creator.

Movie Review: 13 (2011, Blu-ray)

Not to be confused with the Catherine Hardwicke coming-of-age drama by the same name, 13 is actually a remake of the critically acclaimed Gela Babluani thriller 13 Tzameti. Babluani takes on the duty as director of the remake for a film he did just fine the first time. Movie Review: Elvira's Movie Macabre: Lady Frankenstein/Jesse James vs. Frankenstein and Scared to Death/Tormented

Horror hosts we're a big part of my earlier genre film experiences. Rich Koz's Son of Svengoolie show during my years growing up in Chicago was my first big exposure to schlock and even the occasional horror classic like Creature From the Black Lagoon. Outside of Svengoolie, there was Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) and her double D delights. I had no problem oggling Elvira during her cheezy bits during on her show Elvira's Movie Macabre. Apparently I wasn't the only one because Elvira became a hit and a pop-culture icon.

Movie Review: The Defiled (2011)

We start by following what appears to be a zombie looking over an empty metropolis. After a few short moments, he's accosted by another zombie. The two go back to a makeshift camp. It seems that these zombies are able to function as some sort of a tribe or society. They take care of each other, feed each other and even have sex. In fact, the story really begins after our lead zombie's child is born and the mother is dead.
