Movie Review: All American Bully (2015)

It seems that over the past few years that one of the best companies to find the more eclectic and delightfully horrific titles to come out of the low-budget and micro-budget film world has been Wild Eye Releasing. If you've seen titles like Disco Exorcist, Blood Soaked and The Electric Chair you know exactly what I'm talking about. Recently they've released a film that carries what is an unquestionably very topical and relevant problem that troubles so many youth across the world, bullying.

The premise for All American Bully is somewhat unique here as you have two young men (played by Daren Ackerman and Alexander Fraser) who were friends when they were very young. Like many kids though as they hit their teens, they grow apart. John (Ackerman) begins to initiate some really nasty bullying to Devon (Fraser) and his friends. It seems that John's hostility goes a little deeper though to a humiliating incident from several years earlier. Something so embarrassing to John, that as a way to fight back, Devon takes to social media thanks to the urging of his friends. While momentarily satisfying, this opens up some horrible events that happen later.

Movie Review: Race War: The Remake (2013)

From the start, I could tell that Race War: The Remake was going to be a low budget mess. I know this, because I have been a part of many low budget messes in my time. At the same time, I knew it could be fun, because based on the opening credits, I knew there was no way the people involved in this movie took themselves seriously. How did I know this? After an epic narrative that scrolled across the screen to set up the story, lead actor Howard Calvert, who plays a drug dealer named Baking Soda, dances in a forest preserve behind the opening credits.

The forest preserve is a familiar scene in the micro-budget horror world. So is a warehouse / storage facility that doubles as the storefront of something else. Add poor lighting and on and off room tone, and this a a late '90s or early 2000s c-movie masterpiece. I know you think I'm dumping on Race War, but I'm not. Movies at this level are what they are. They're usually silly, and they usually look a little crappy in spots. That's fine when you know what you're going into. There is one very important element that every movie at this level needs in order to be enjoyable. Fun. It has to show that the cast and crew had fun. After watching Race War, I can tell you that there's no way anybody involved didn't have a great time, and it shows.

Movie Review: Murder University (DVD, 2012)

Murder University is the latest film from Wild Eye releasing. A company that for the past couple of years has had a pretty good eye (no pun intended) for releasing quality genre films. They continue the success with releasing this gem. Within the first two minutes a gal already has her top removed and is ready to get down... what happens? Oh boy, she hears a noise and asks her boyfriend to investigate. He responds "Are you serious" "Yes or no sex", then he says "fine, but you better be ready when I get back". "Get back" oh boy I love this shit. I'm watching a modern day 80's horror film.

He is then killed within the next minute... yes this is pure 80's horror. Then a Lesbian kiss, a few more murders, a chase happens and the John Carpenter 80's style score kicks in. All within the 6 minute mark... then the theme song with the lyrics "Murder University" kicks in... I'm in horror heaven baby.

Movie Review: Dropping Evil (DVD, 2012)

Dropping Evil is a mind fuck of a movie, it's soul goal is to fuck with you. It accomplishes all of this in spades. I love it when an Independent film shoots for the stars. What the filmmakers did with D.E. Was take a high concept idea and make it on a low budget. But due to some creative cinematography, editing and post production tinkering they were able to pull it off.

The plot concerns... well it's an easy film to spoil. So the basic premise is four friends go on a road trip, one friend is a Jesus freak. They want to loosen that one friend up a bit some they put some LSD in his drink... think is are crazy Christian loses his shit are starts bumping off his buddies. Oh and did I mention there is a “Cabin in the woods” style corporation watching these folks via a camera that's been implanted in the eye of one of the friends?

1. A lot has changed since the last time we pleasantly chatted, Wild Eye Releasing is getting a lot of press these days and even mainstream press. You and Rob seem to have grown leaps and bounds lately, are you guys surprised?

A. No, we aren’t surprised at all. We are a specialty label, we bring hand selected titles to the viewer based upon popularity of the subject matter. We carefully consider every title we release, we don’t base it on genre (be it horror or sex), we base it on the subject matter and the execution of the cinematic process. These days documentaries are doing us great, perfect examples being The Death of Andy Kaufman and Unauthorized – The Story of Rock & Roll Comics.

Movie Review: Disco Exorcist (2011)

For genre companies, finding good quality independedent horror flicks isn’t always the easiest thing to pull off in such a demanding DVD market. Wild Eye Releasing has been an exception with some of their truly unpredictable choices of movies. More often than not they put out some entertaining stuff and it looks like it’s going to continue especially with the recent release of Richard Griffin’s insane Disco Exorcist.

Disco Exorcist is about a young man named Rex Romanski (Mike Reed), a 70’s swinger that does what many horny guys do, use women like toilet paper. Rex has unfortunately fucked with the wrong woman and this particular lady (Sarah Nicklin) is doing a little more than keying his car or having her brother kick his ass, she’s using voodoo and casting spells on those around Rex.

Movie Review: The Story of Rock 'N' Roll Comics (2012)

Anyone who visited a comic book shop in the 1990s has to remember the slew of independent titles that suddenly showed up. Whether it was Razor or Evil Ernie or anything in between, they changed our view of the comic industry. The little guy could do something on his own, even if the writing or art were sub-par. There was a section of books to the left of the register at our local comic store. That's where the adult themed and just plain odd books ended up. That's the first place I saw Rock 'N' Roll Comics.

The artwork was bad, and the writing was usually worse, and that would be enough to make me leave them on the shelf, but they were about some of my favorite bands. Todd Loren, founder of the fledgling comic book company, didn't care who got mad at him. He was determined to publish his books unauthorized, and as the covers always read, he was proud of it.

Movie Review: The Death of Andy Kaufman (2011)

Andy Kaufman was probably the most unique comedian that ever lived. He was part comic, part character actor and part performance artist. I read Bob Zmuda's book, Andy Kaufman Revealed! Zmuda shared details of the kinds of pranks Kaufman would play. At one point, he wanted to fake his own death. Zmuda and the rest of Kaufman's friends told him that it was a terrible thing to do. Many think that Kaufman did it anyway. Director Christopher Maloney decided to research the possibility that Kaufman might still be alive.

1. At Wild Eye, what is your and Rob's mission statement?

KJC: James, our mission statement is very simple. To deliver quality, independent cinema to the movie aficionado who has watched all the lame garbage that passes for independent cinema these days. Bear in mind that QUALITY is the key word here, we are not offering lame, shot in one-week video product that makes a lame attempt to compete with Hollywood product simply by being “polished”. If you look at all the titles that have been released, each one was hand picked out of countless submissions. We stand behind all these titles personally; I can give you countless reasons why they are heads and shoulders above the rest of the offerings out there. As far as my personal mission statement as a filmmaker, whatever I make is done in the services of the humanities. The bulk of the people in my immediate family are social workers. My films are my contributions to humanity. They are pieces of a puzzle that at the time of my death should be viewed as one huge road map to life. It’s the only way I can make a difference in this life. The two films that I am currently trying to pick up financing for are Three Slices of Delirium and Rasputin on Campus. The Three Slices of Delirium promo trailer is already done, the Rasputin on Campus trailer is shot but still being edited. Three Slices is a period piece in the tradition of Brothers Grimm only grimmer. But there is not one story in that anthology that no one will be able to not relate to. Rasputin is very different in its approach, but it signifies the way things never change, at least not completely. We are all sort of locked in a whirlpool where things appear to change but in reality nothing really happens that can qualify as change. Anyhow, I hope I haven’t bored you. I can make a “big dick” joke if you’d like?

Movie Review: The Bloody Ape (1997, Wild Eye Releasing)

Wild Eye Releasing has put out some interesting releases over the past couple years. Of course you have the outrageously sleazy doll epic Dolla Morte, Del Close's lost hippie flick Gold and one of my picks for "Best of 2010", The Electric Chair, all being released last year. One thing that may surprise some of you reading is - these guys are actually filmmakers themselves. Wild Eye owner Keith Crocker has directed a few films, one of which I've had the pleasure of reviewing today called The Bloody Ape. Crocker and friend George Reis (creator of the popular genre review site DVD Drive-in) take a stab at recreating an homage to the great schlock films of yesteryear . As a longtime fan of exploitation, this DVD got me all sorts of excited.

Movie Review: The Electric Chair (1986)

As someone who’s dabbled in the furious world of stand-up comedy (not so effectively), I’ve undoubtedly seen numerous interesting characters in my travels. Most of which are sad and angry individuals. I've come to the conclusion that angst can breed brilliance in comedy and other forms of entertainment. I do recall throughout my formative years when I was exposed to the likes of Sam Kinison, Bill Hicks and other immense comic talents that, well, these guys have some seriously fucked up, troubled lives. Arnie Schwartz, the lead character of Mark Eisenstein’s The Electric Chair, is no different than Kinison or Hicks - he's just make believe.
